Bug #: 30007 Summary: Publish or perish result text messed up in wine Product: Wine Version: 1.4-rc5 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: scallegari@arces.unibo.it Classification: Unclassified
To reproduce:
1) Install publish or perish (it is a no cost app) 2) Start the application, see it opening on the author impact tab. 3) write a common surname in the authors search field 4) See the publication list fill in (sometimes the surname is too common and the application finds too many publications, pick another surname in the case) 5) Look at the result pane. It is unreadable, because multiple pieces of text appear overlapped one to the other.
Those results are what one is actually looking for. So the bug makes the application useless under wine. This is a pity, since wine is advertised as the way to run publish or perish on linux by its very authors.

--- Comment #2 from Dan Kegel dank@kegel.com 2012-02-25 21:11:18 CST --- http://www.harzing.com/pop_wine.htm is their page about running on wine. http://www.harzing.com/download/PoPSetup.exe is the installer.

--- Comment #3 from Sergio Callegari scallegari@arces.unibo.it 2012-02-26 07:22:28 CST --- Note that among the "known bugs when working under wine" the PoP authors list
Results summary columns not aligned Because Wine uses a slightly different font than native Windows, the alignment of the columns in the Results summary text field is slightly off.
Evidently, what in the past was a mere misalignement has more recently become a full overlapping of different parts of text.

--- Comment #4 from Sergio Callegari scallegari@arces.unibo.it 2012-04-17 16:51:44 CDT --- Hi,
I have noticed that the issue is with wine handling of the TAB character.
If you go on the messed text, select all, copy and paste into an editor capable of showing TABs, (e.g. on kate if using kde on linux) you will see that all the text is correctly copied and that in the editor it looks just fine.
The problem appears to be wine doing things like taking
This bit of text -TAB-> This other bit of text
and rather than rendering as
This bit of text This other bit of text
(where the second "This" starts at the next tab stop after the end of text)
renders it as
This biThis other bit of text
In other words, the problem seems to be wine miscomputing where to start text after tab stops.
Please mark the status as confirmed as it is quite easy to check that the bug exists. And if possible try looking into it: it is a pity that a piece of code that actively advertises wine cannot be used in wine.

--- Comment #5 from Sergio Callegari scallegari@arces.unibo.it 2012-04-17 16:52:18 CDT --- BTW. Bug is confirmed in latest unstable 1.5.2

--- Comment #6 from Rosanne DiMesio dimesio@earthlink.net 2012-04-17 21:36:19 CDT --- I can't reproduce this; the columns appear perfectly aligned on my system (tested in 1.5.2). However, I have the MS corefonts installed systemwide. Does winetricks corefonts fix it for you?
