Summary: Can not run e-Sword.exe Product: Wine Version: 1.2.2 Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: josvis@mtnloaded.co.za
running e-Sword gives the following error: "The program e-Sword.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. This can be caused by a problem in the program or a deficiency in Wine. You may want to check ...winehq.org (which I did) for tips about running this application. If this problem is not present under Windows and has not been reported yet, you can report it ..."
My machine : Windows XP / Linux Ubuntu 11.04 dual boot, both updated regularly, desktop, stand-alone, sole user. I have installed Wine through method described in ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1524397 (sudo apt-get install wine) which automatically fetched Wine ver 1.2.2. In the meantime I had downloaded e-Sword's setup983.exe, setup991.exe and niv.exe. I then installed setup983.exe on wine after which I could run e-Sword successfully, but after I installed niv.exe on e-Sword (which you must do) e-Sword failed and gave the above error. (niv.exe is the NIV Bible which runs on e-Sword). This pattern followed on each consecutive installation. I then uninstalled e-Sword from Wine and deleted all remaining e-Sword files.
I then installed setup991.exe with the same procedure and the same result.
Then I tried to install e-Sword with method described on ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=404042 and with both versions of e-Sword but again with the same result.
Then I did a clean uninstall of Wine 1.2 and installed Wine 1.3 from Synaptic. Installation of e-Sword with the same procedure described above gave the same result.
ON WINDOWS XP I HAD NO PROBLEMS AT ALL.

--- Comment #1 from Dan Kegel dank@kegel.com 2011-07-09 10:22:52 CDT --- Did you try the tips from http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=23609 yet? i.e. does winetricks mfc42 make the app happier?
Please don't shout.

--- Comment #2 from Jos Visser josvis@mtnloaded.co.za 2011-07-09 14:42:43 CDT --- Yes thanks Dan. It is step 2 of the Installation Process of thread 1524397 which I followed to the letter. Thanks for input.

--- Comment #3 from Dan Kegel dank@kegel.com 2011-07-09 16:28:57 CDT --- Try this alternate recipe (rename your .wine directory first if you don't want to lose data in it):
rm -rf ~/.wine winetricks mfc42 wine setup991.exe
After doing that, the app worked for me.

--- Comment #4 from Jos Visser josvis@mtnloaded.co.za 2011-07-11 01:12:28 CDT --- Thanks very much Dan. You have nailed it......on the button. Just to give e-Sword the full picture I am repeating all the steps (instructions) I used on the terminal to install my Bible on Linux Ubuntu.
sudo apt-get install wine sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade rm -rf ~/.wine winetricks mfc42 wine setup991.exe wine niv.exe (or whichever bible is used)
I will bring this bug to the attention of e-Sword
Thanks again

--- Comment #5 from Dan Kegel dank@kegel.com 2011-07-11 10:21:47 CDT --- Yes, it would be nice if e-sword bundled mfc42.
Anyway, this is now a dup of the metabug 657, "wine needs mfc42".
