Bug ID: 35427 Summary: Wine crashes when running Diplomacy (1999) Product: Wine Version: 1.6.1 Hardware: x86 OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: major Priority: P2 Component: -unknown Assignee: wine-bugs@winehq.org Reporter: lordpeyre@yahoo.com Classification: Unclassified
Created attachment 47280 --> http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=47280 Backtrace
Diplomacy (the 1999 version) runs great on Wine, except that it suddenly crashes at seemingly random points in the middle of the game.

--- Comment #1 from Leon Baradat lordpeyre@yahoo.com --- I received an email from Ken Sharp, who approved my submission of the game. He asked me to upgrade Wine (from 1.4.1) and consider filing a bug report here if the game continued to crash.

--- Comment #2 from Bruno Jesus 00cpxxx@gmail.com --- Not major, read http://bugs.winehq.org/page.cgi?id=fields.html#importance
Please try again in wine 1.7.11.

--- Comment #3 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com --- Also, have you tested this on windows to ensure it's not an application bug?

--- Comment #4 from Leon Baradat lordpeyre@yahoo.com --- Created attachment 47290 --> http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=47290 Backtrace from 1.7.1
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=35427
--- Comment #5 from Leon Baradat lordpeyre@yahoo.com --- Ok, I upgraded from 1.6.1 to 1.7.1. Now the game crashes immediately upon opening. Ditto after a reboot.
Yes, I used to run this on my old Windows 2000 machine, and it didn't crash like this. Certainly you could play an entire game without it crashing.

Could you please install debug symbols? It looks like it's crashing in wined3d instead of the game code now.

--- Comment #9 from hanska2@luukku.com --- Could you try with more recent wine? 1.7.24 in this case. I think you need some dll override, but I am not sure what you should use.
d3d9_36, 43 compiler Are quite common overrides.

--- Comment #10 from Leon Baradat lordpeyre@yahoo.com --- Ok, I upgraded Wine to 1.7.24 (enough that it seems to run other programs anyway), but when I try to run Diplomacy, the screen goes blank--then when I hit a key it dumps me to the Desktop, with the resolution shrunk down to 800x600--even if I told it to open Diplomacy.exe in a window.
If I run the program from a command prompt I get this: ~/.wine/drive_c/Games/Diplomacy$ env WINEPREFIX="/home/leon/.wine" wine C:\windows\command\start.exe /Unix Only 1 reported test report. Hard to tell how it works with newer wine.
You may want to try other compatibility mode, 95,98 or me.
at least in kde alt+f2 brings a menu where you can type commands...xrandr -s 1920x1080 would set the video mode 1920x1080. You can also have console open and type that or similar line into console if you have issues restoring video mode.

--- Comment #12 from Leon Baradat lordpeyre@yahoo.com --- Uh, my report *is* for the latest version of Wine. Also, I was running in compatibility for Win98.

Oh--and yes, this looks like the same game.

--- Comment #14 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com --- This is your friendly reminder that there has been no bug activity for over a year. Is this still an issue in current (1.7.51 or newer) wine?
