Summary: since few versions of wine graphics in warhammer40k is not drawn and causes crashes. Product: Wine Version: 1.1.24 Platform: PC-x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: major Priority: P2 Component: gdi32 AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: nevasith@gmail.com
Recent updates of wine introduced a dramatic fall in Warhammer 40.000 Dawn of War series. The game used to run on high details on my ATI Radeon 3400 card, now they barely work on low. The real problem is the graphics drawing engine - some parts are not even drawn at all (ex armor of the TAU commander) Also these objects tend to crash the game instantly. Even the low detail graphics keep this problem even in the game menu. Fonts also have bacame unreadable. I tried to use console to get informations on what may be wrong, but there are only standard fixme lines dropping like mad. Downgrading to wine 1.01 from ubuntu 9.04 repository solved the problem for me, so there is something wrong with the newest versions of wine.

I also have a ATI graphics card and DoW crashes. Can you please try this fix via regedit:
- Go to the console - enter the following command: wine regedit - The registry editor will open - Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER - Go to Software - Go to Wine - Go to Direct3D or create it, if it does not exist: right click "Wine" and create a new key named Direct3D - Mark the new Folder(Key) Direct 3D, add a new "String Value" (Zeichenfolge for german users) named UseGLSL - DoubleClick UseGLSL and enter "disabled" at the content-field

--- Comment #6 from jost mail@jost.cx 2011-01-17 14:51:14 CST --- Ok, i can confirm this bug. Every time i build a TAU commander the game crashes. The model is not drawn completely as described by Asteroth. The TAU only exist in the expansion pack "Dark Crusade" so i will add the bug link to this application.
The mentioned change in regedit fixes the bug.

hmm seems like my problem i had with soulstorm
long version http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=10571
the upper comments short version: was not wine fault every wine version gave me the crash had to roll back from 10.12 to 10.10 sofar no probs and its working hope it helps you

--- Comment #11 from jost mail@jost.cx 2011-01-25 02:00:12 CST --- Well, i don't thik you are completely right. I use Catalyst 9.3, because there is no newer version available for my graphics card (Radeon x850)
So i can't go back from 10.12 to 10.10 ;-)
But i agree that the Ati Catalyst driver might be the problem. I will try an open source driver as soon as i reinstall my system. http://www.x.org/wiki/RadeonFeature

--- Comment #12 from HennR hennr@hennr.name 2011-01-25 02:13:30 CST --- I just got report by a user playing DoW Soulstorm who was unable to build the Tau Commander.
He used fglrx 10.12, after rolling back to 10.10 the problem is gone.
I can't confirm this bug either, running a nvidia card.

Today i made a test with the open source ati driver (xserver-xorg-video-radeon 6.13.1)
With this driver the graphics are completely broken, but there is no crash when building the tau commander and the model is drawn completely.
So this is really caused by ATIs closed source driver (fglrx 9.3 and 10.12)
I agree to close this bug. But you should add something to the games description.
- fglrx 9.3 and fglrx 10.12 cause crashes - flgrx 10.10 works - disabling glsl via regedit helps to avoid the crashes:
- Go to the console - enter the following command: wine regedit - The registry editor will open - Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER - Go to Software - Go to Wine - Go to Direct3D or create it, if it does not exist: right click "Wine" and create a new key named Direct3D - Mark the new Folder(Key) Direct 3D, add a new "String Value" (Zeichenfolge for german users) named UseGLSL - DoubleClick UseGLSL and enter "disabled" at the content-field

thanks for the test and summing the workaround up.
I will add it to the related games soon.
To make this clear, this is only an issue with the tau race, right?

--- Comment #15 from jost mail@jost.cx 2011-01-31 13:35:30 CST --- Hi HennR,
i had the crash on several occasions. Most of the times i could not find out, what caused it.
One other thing i could reproduce: - In Dow and DoW Winter Assault the game crashed when a scout died. Reproducable by building a scout team, selecting it and pressing delete. - In Dow Dark Crusade a dying Scout did not cause a crash.
I think the animation or engine has been updated in Dark Crusade in some way. So it is not that easy to say.
But all DoW games crashed frequently for me until i changed the value in the registry. I surely did no finish one single game before without a crash.

--- Comment #19 from HennR hennr@hennr.name 2011-06-01 12:56:46 CDT --- This is with a high possibility an issue that occurs with ATI cards only.
Neither the closed source nor the OS driver for ATI cards do work properly.
We saw several such issues that never occurred using a nvidia card.
I vote again for closing this bug.

There's still a possibility there's a wine bug here, I'm hesitant to close it without a wined3d person agreeing.
In any case, an ATI bug should be filed.

I cannot test anymore with the offical driver from AMD/ATI, because they are not releasing new driver versions for my old graphics card (radeon x850) and their old driver doesnt support newer linux distributions.
So i am forced to the open source radeon driver and i found out, how to avoid the big graphical problems. The problems went away after installing the package libtxc-dxtn0. For Ubuntu users this can be done with the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install libtxc-dxtn0 sudo add-apt-repository --remove ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa
The developers of the driver cannot include this package by default because of patents. More information can be found here: http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/S3TC http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S3_Texture_Compression

We need someone who still uses Ati and their latest proprietary driver (Catalyst 13.4). If the problem still exists, we would need someone from the wine time to find out, if it is caused by wine or by the driver ..

No, if there is a problem with catalyst 13.4 a new bug report should be filed.
This one is irrelevant nowadays as it only happened with a driver from 200_9_
+1 for closing.
