Summary: Team Fortress 2 hangs with looping sound after random time, say 5 mins Product: Wine Version: 1.1.18 Platform: Other OS/Version: other Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: enhancement Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: michael@araneidae.co.uk
Team Fortress 2 hangs with looping sound after a random amount of play, typically no more than five or ten minutes. The hang seems to occur at particularly busy points in the game.
When asked, Steam link to this page: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=5034-EIPV-6426 which suggests that the problem is running out of "paged pool". Unfortunately the rest of this link is Windows specific.
My environment is:
Ubuntu 8.10 (with all PulseAudio components uninstalled) ATI Radeon X1650 graphics with Catalyst 9.3 drivers

--- Comment #3 from Michael Abbott michael@araneidae.co.uk 2009-03-31 10:17:30 --- I see no case for this being a duplicate of 15162. In that bug report there is no description of sound looping, and the bug reported here does not involve crashes. There is only one passing reference to sound in 15162.
In fact, the only similarity I can see between these two bugs is Team Fortress 2. This bug report also includes reference to a relevant communication from Steam.
Reopening.

--- Comment #4 from Michael Abbott michael@araneidae.co.uk 2009-03-31 12:36:06 --- This problem clearly has an interaction with the X server: while the game is hanging with looping sound, no other updates occur on the screen, despite the fact that I was running top in a terminal window on second display.
After killing the game (`wineserver -k` suffices) everything returns to normal. There are no extra error messages generated by wine or by steam, and no messages in any error log that I can see.
Any suggestions for anything that might create more diagnostic information would be welcome.

--- Comment #5 from Michael Abbott michael@araneidae.co.uk 2009-03-31 12:57:58 --- Up to now I've been running the game with WINEDEBUG=-all (sorry, I'd forgotten that). Running with WINEDEBUG unset (so default logging level) is stunningly noise -- over 4MB to the point of hang, too much to attach as a log! The only new message that appears at the point of hang (rather than all the normal noise during play) is the very last line:
err:ntdll:RtlpWaitForCriticalSection section 0x7e4918c0 "x11drv_main.c: X11DRV_CritSection" wait timed out in thread 0024, blocked by 0009, retrying (60 sec)
Interestingly, on this occasion there were graphical artifacts that I've never seen before, I wonder if there are timing issues arising from all the extra logging: fonts (player names) were garbaged (random dots), and there were some odd visual glitches.

--- Comment #6 from Vitaliy Margolen vitaliy@kievinfo.com 2009-03-31 20:42:26 --- Sound looping has nothing to do with the crash. It's the totally separate thread replaying the same sound.
