Summary: Sound stops after some time (restarting sound in game usually possible) Product: Wine Version: 1.3.26 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: pitlicek@gmail.com
In many games (SC2, Source engine games, Oblivion), the sound stops working after while (completely random, sometimes couple of minutes, sometimes above hour). It is usually possible to restart the sound in game (going to options menu in SC2, snd_restart in source engine console, starting new game in Oblivion) but it's pretty annoying, if you have to do it every couple of minutes.
I started observing this bug long time ago (probably about a year ago, nut sure), so it's not result of current sound engine rewrite (and it doesn't fixed this).
Currently using Ubuntu 10.04 64bit, PulseAudio.

--- Comment #1 from Jan Kalab pitlicek@gmail.com 2011-08-12 14:40:13 CDT --- Oh, and when this happens during cutscenes in SC2, the lipsync stops to work, or sometimes the whole cutscene stops, if it must be in sync with audio (but the background effects, like rain, keeps running).

--- Comment #5 from MacNean dardack@gmail.com 2011-09-05 17:05:10 CDT --- Jan I responded to your crackling sound thing bug for SC2, I'll repost here because it's same issue I believe:
From what I understand 11.04 and below has a bug in the alsa-plugins/pulse
implementation. It's supposedly fixed in 11.10. I'm still on 10.10 cause I refuse at this point to go to Unity. (If unity gave me 2 bars (ie Gnome 2), let me get rid of that launcher thing, had indicators for wicd/steam/other things that don't show in Unity's bar for me, i'd upgrade).
Um I can't find the launchpad bug report, but I've been all over this because of me refusing to upgrade, wine-pulse patches no longer working in 1.3.25+, and the bug in alsa-plugins (alsa plugin to pulse)

i can fully confirm that issue. For me the sound works for a few seconds, or a min or two and then suddently dies ingame.
Im using Wine 1.3.32 with Ubuntu 11.1064 bit. Im using Win7 compatibility mode. I had some fixmes in the logs about the number of channels (32, 1000) can't be handled, using 2 .
I'm using pulseaudio and the wine alsa backend.

--- Comment #8 from Aaron H armahillo@gmail.com 2011-11-22 16:45:54 CST --- I can CONFIRM this as well.
Running Oblivion (patched with official patches up to 1.2). Wine 1.3.28 NVidia card (GeForce something or other... 512MB of VRAM) An obscene amount of system RAM and a current AMD processor.
I looked in the output while running, I don't see any obvious culprits. The sound worked fine during the intro (prison run), though when I stepped away from the computer and game back, the sound cut out when I began the "sewers" portion.
Out in the full world, when I first load the game, whether i'm in town or outdoors, the sound works for about 2-5 minutes then cuts out. Dialog seems to be a frequent trigger, though not the only one. Disabling bgMusic in Oblivion.ini has *helped* but not *solved* the problem.
Performance seems to be inconsistent. Worked fine when I played it on my laptop (512MB NVidia video card, Core 2 Duo Intel proc) last year.
Game plays fine, aside from the sound.

--- Comment #9 from Nelson pampangadude@yahoo.ca 2011-11-27 18:01:58 CST --- I can confirm this as well. I had no issues with my previous wine setup (compiled it myself wine 1.3.21 with rgl.patch). since i upgraded my system from 11.04 to 11.10 I decided to install lastest wine 1.3.33. This is when my sound problem began. When I run WOW Cataclysm, my sound often cuts out from the get go, sometimes last 1 to 10 minutes. Other times half hour or if I'm lucky, an entire duration of a 5man instance. Occasionally, it comes back when i tweak ingame option Sound where I check/uncheck 'Use Hardware'. Most of the time however i had to reboot game but with the same result.
Currently running 64bit Ubuntu 11.10, PulseAudio.

When I start the sessions both have audio, but after a while (could be something between seconds and hours it's never the same) the audio stops, I even have had one session cutting sound while the other continued to make noise for a few hours until it also went mute.
After the sound goes mute in wine, all the other applications still have audio.
my os is opensuse 12.1 x86_64 wineversion is 1.3.34
I start my sessions with the following commands.

PS. I have found other way to recreate the sound - If you install Pulseaudio sound control you can kill the running input signal from wine's alsa-pulseaudio plugin. It will recreate immediately and guest what ... sound returns ... till it will die again in some time.

--- Comment #16 from Dirk gdwesterdijk@hotmail.com 2011-12-18 13:33:18 CST --- I have this problem too. Recently I started again with the game Dungeon keeper II and I could usually play for an hour or so before the sound broke. With the last update (1.3.35) this changed to only 5 minutes. Also noteworthy: after the last update I can usually play exactly 2 video's in the movies section, after which the sound is broken. Sometimes the sound breaks while playing a movie, but it is always broken after 2 movies. Even more annoying is the fact that with broken sound, trying to play a movie breaks the whole game. My only option is to kill wineserver. I did not test this before 1.3.35, so I cannot say how it was then. Another game that is affected is GTA:SA, here I could play for quite a while before the sound broke, but now usually it already breaks in the menus... Here the cut scenes do not work anymore, so I cannot finish missions.

--- Comment #19 from Rob rob.verduijn@gmail.com 2011-12-30 07:08:35 CST --- removing pulse audio becomes a bigger pain with every new release of any distro that is using it.
It is getting more tightly integrated into most popular distros with every release.
On suse I've already had a native linux app (mumble) crashing on me when I turned off pulse audio (yes i did configure it again for alsa in stead of pulse). This is very annoying since now i have to choose between playing eve with sound and no mumble and eve with no sound and being able to communicate with my fleet/corp during opps.
So I personally consider simply de-installing/disabling pulse a solution with a lot of negative side effects which I prefer to avoid.

--- Comment #20 from Christian christian.frank@gmx.de 2012-01-08 04:26:03 CST --- does this issues still happen for you guys with 1.3.36 ? Personally i had some great success 2 days ago with wine 1.3.36+pulse but now i have bad sound again. Trying to figure out what caused that issue today.
It would be fantastic if some of the bug reporters also could test if 1.3.36 already softens or solves the sound issues for them.

I've been running eve online with two sessions for almost 12 hours now. (in afk mode) And both still have audio. So either the bug takes real long now before it shows itself or it has been fixed.

It seems I was lucky with my last session with sound.
Today I played with the same setup as I mentioned before and sound crapped out in one of my sessions in less than 5 minutes.
So audio still fails for me after a while, although it can be hours before it happens as opposed to todays 5 minutes.

--- Comment #24 from Aaron H armahillo@gmail.com 2012-01-10 08:24:49 CST --- I was having (and still have) problems with this bug when playing Oblivion, but the sound is less buggy in Skyrim. Getting the sound to work in the first place was a challenge, but installing DirectX 10 and alternating between Windows XP and Windows 7 emulation modes seemed to help. (That is: I'd set it for Win XP emu mode, load the game, and if sound didn't work, I'd quit and re-load with Win 7 emu selected. Neither one nor the other consistently performed better, so I'm not sure what's at play there)
I have not tested Oblivion since installing DirectX 10 (installed via the redist on the Skyrim disc), but will do that.
