Summary: When Steam starts it gives error "To run Steam, you must first connect to the Internet" after trying to update. Product: Wine Version: 1.0.1 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: major Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: ktcox@rogers.com
When I try to start Steam (the install went fine) it tries to update but never gets past 0% and then gives the error "Steam.exe (main exception): To run Steam, you must first connect to the Internet".
Steam worked fine on my first Ubuntu install but after I reinstalled (same version 9.10 Karmic Koala) Steam can't find the internet.

--- Comment #3 from GNU/Castor gnu.castor@free.fr 2010-02-16 08:01:50 --- I have the same bug since 2-3 days (an debian update somewere ?) in unstable with 1.1.32-1 wine' version. The console display of steam : ----------------- CellID: Fetching server list from CSDS. . . On my debian I make some stuff with PulseAudio but before I logout of steam and can log anymore. But I have play with same sound configuration without problem just before logout. Not that.
I look for the libntlm0 error version indicated. No trace of update in my aptitude logs but juste before the network bug : STEAM HAS BEEN UPDATED Perhaps an new version dependancy of libntlm for him ?

--- Comment #4 from Vitaliy Margolen vitaliy@kievinfo.com 2010-02-16 09:27:11 --- Steam works fine here. Try installing it into a new wineprefix (just the Steam itself). And you have to upgrade from wine-1.1.32 - it's a known bad version that breaks Steam.

--- Comment #5 from GNU/Castor gnu.castor@free.fr 2010-02-16 10:08:51 --- Version upgraded to : 1.1.37~winehq1-1 1.1.38~winehq0~ubuntu~9.04-0ubuntu1
same result : "no network" (but steam servers can be pinged (see terminal) by steam.exe before exit window) :-/ I try now to disable PA.

--- Comment #7 from Mykro c_winehq@selador.com.au 2010-05-19 04:27:17 --- Ubuntu 10.04 Wine 1.1.42 SteamInstall.msi downloaded 19 May 2010
Install proceeds smoothly and then runs Steam.exe which immediately throws the error "Steam.exe (main exception): To run Steam, you must first connect to the Internet".
gecko is installed, have also tried in a new wineprefix.
Incidentally, running Steam.exe in the terminal produces no console output.
$ env WINEPREFIX=~/.wine2 wine Steam.exe $
How can we diagnose this further?

--- Comment #8 from Mykro c_winehq@selador.com.au 2010-05-19 04:50:08 --- Sorry, I discovered this error was due to the firewall blocking Steam.
This may also have been the cause for the others affected.

which firewall got you?
Mobloquer. The Steam servers must be on the blocklists, and it's completely silent when it blocks something. A bit of a *facepalm* moment!
