http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10708
Summary: Wine lacks support for animated cursors Product: Wine Version: 0.9.50. Platform: PC-x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: NEW Severity: major Priority: P2 Component: wine-user AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: ben@atomnet.co.uk CC: andrewriedi@gmail.com
Currently Wine lacks support for Animated cursors meaning that in games that use them you either have no mouse at all or just the basic X mouse (which in itself is a bug so eventually until this is fixed these games will lack a cursor entirely).
Some examples of games are Battlefield 2, Act of War, Command & Conquer Generals, etc. Ranked "Major" because it affects quite a few applications.

--- Comment #9 from Andrew Riedi andrewriedi@gmail.com 2008-02-18 23:49:04 --- For now, I think we should leave all these bugs open. 6989 is the only one that is not a complete dupe of this that this blocks. (There is a garbled cursor issue - I think this is due to our code in winex11.drv where we create xmax/ymax and make them not greater than 32.) There is useful info in all the other bugs, and this one sort of ties them together.
That said, only having this one instead of both this and 5828 for the 1.0 milestone might be best. In any case, I really don't have strong feelings in any direction. The only thing I *don't* want to do is discourage users from filing more bugs.

Sorry the patch has some miscellaneous cruft. I do not propose it as a solution to wine not having animated cursors, I know there are people working on this. I attach it so people can apply it specifically to get Perfect World to run. I am less than happy about forcing the hotpsot to 0,0 for the raw bitmap animated cursor.

Wine-1.1.3 patch changed to work with wine-1.1.7
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10708
--- Comment #48 from Lauri Niskanen ape3000@gmail.com 2008-11-10 09:44:00 --- Is the any regressions with this patch or why can't you put it to the main trunk for the official development releases? It would be so much easier to enjoy about this feature if it were automatically installed. This is quite common thing, so it would help many ordinary users.
Could you please say any reasons, why this patch would not be good for the main code?

--- Comment #49 from Peter Driessen driessen.peter@gmail.com 2008-11-10 10:04:51 --- Sorry, patch doesn't work properly Only works for games with animated cursors
Cursor seems to be invisible when no animated cursors are used. I only tried to get animated cursors working in wine 1.1.7 to play games that don't work with previous wine versions.

It's a hack, and doesn't work properly, see:

It finally makes C&C and RA3 playable without additional patches. Both use animations of course so it's not perfect but definitely playable.

--- Comment #58 from Alexander Brüning lama@lamamail.de 2008-11-24 12:17:33 --- Was this patch included in the 1.1.9 release? I didn't apply it but the cursors are still visible in C&C Red Alert 3.

--- Comment #59 from knipl@in.tum.de 2008-11-24 12:38:08 --- Yep, it is finally included in the main branch and thus will be part of the releases.

--- Comment #60 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2008-11-24 13:44:07 --- Wine has support for the first frame of the animated cursor, which should make 99% of people happy. I'd suggest closing this bug as fixed, then file a new bug for full animated cursor support. This bug has gotten pretty shaggy.

--- Comment #61 from Thomas Beimel gnulinux@thomas-beimel.de 2008-11-24 15:03:16 --- I oppose closing this bug because it makes a lot of applications unable to use without a patch/workaround i.e. Knights of Honor. Instead of the first frame of the cursor you can't see any of the used .ani cursor.

That's why I suggest making a new bug. We've got support for basic cursors now, and this bug is messy.
