Summary: Steam client, when I click on game, windows pops up requesting latest version of DX Product: WineHQ Apps Database Version: unspecified Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: major Priority: P2 Component: appdb-unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: faheyd@yahoo.com
I've installed wine-0.9.54 on ubuntu 7.10 (system updated with the latest patches, etc). Steam client installs and works fine after fixing gecko.
However, in the Steam client, when I click on CounterStrike Source game (or any steam game in the game tab), I get a little window that says, 'Steam - The latest version of DirectX is required' and it won't let the game start.
I get this error in spite of whatever '-dxlevel XX' I put in the command line or start up options.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=615763 see last posts #8,9,10 to confirm others are seeing this also.
I've not done a bug report before, so I hope I put it in the right place and right format.

--- Comment #1 from Vitaliy Margolen vitaliy@kievinfo.com 2008-02-06 08:29:56 --- Not appDB's bug. Have you tried to remove / rename ~/.wine directory before reinstalling Steam? Also please specify your video card and drivers. And please attach as a file do not paste complete terminal output of running steam.

Not exactly sure what you meant about "Have you tried to remove / rename ~/.wine directory before reinstalling Steam?"
Except for the Gecko problem, the steam install went OK.

rm -rf ~/.wine
Your configuration is broken. When Steam complains about version of DX that means something was not properly installed. Refer to AppDB Steam page for instructions on how to completely reinstall Steam.
If it still does not work, attach screen-shot of the exact error you receive.

--- Comment #4 from Dylan Fahey faheyd@yahoo.com 2008-02-06 14:21:16 --- Reinstalling wine worked. Also the 'install gecko' worked also.
On the original install, I did not 'wait' for the over 5 minute installation of 'winecfg' to work. I just renamed the wine.xxxx to wine and went from there.
A big mistake. (copied Steam to another directory for safe keeping) 1. Removed .wine via cd home directory, rm -rf .wine 2. Full Removal of package via Synaptics 3. Reinstalled via Synaptics 4. Open terminal, cd home directory, run 'winecfg', see multiple errors with mixer/printer, etc, IGNORE. 5. Take coffee break, come back 10 minutes later 6. Wine installed 7. Moved my Steam directory back into Program Files. 8. cd to Steam, run wine ./Steam.exe 9. Steam opens up, asks for Gecko install, say yes 10. All is well, can't seem to keep video settings, but I'll work that out.
Thanks for the help with my noob mistakes.
