Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition fails to install due to symbol in file name
"Chessmaster® Grandmaster Edition Manual.pdf"
The installation then undoes all files.

I found that if I rename the file in the installation folder, then hexedit the
file name in Chessmaster.msi to match, then the install succeeds (then manually
rename it back)

The error messes up Crossover for Mac and PlayOnMac as they need the installer
to succeed.

The Mac locale is whatever the default locale is for USA in Mac OSX.
The Windows locale is whatever Wine sets by default. Are you saying I have to
set the Wine locale somewhere?

Probably en_US.UTF-8. No, wine takes it from your environment (use locale or
echo $LANG).

I've seen a similar issue where a game wouldn't install, because the locale was
C/POSIX, which doesn't support that character.

Is there a download of this around?

If I rename the pdf file to not have the special symbol and hexedit the .msi
file to have the same renamed filename, then the install will work (have to
rename back after installation).

If I rename the pdf file and also hexedit the Chessmaster.msi file to rename
the reference to the pdf file, then the installation succeeds.
This shows that it is definitely just the special character ® that is messing
things up

Yes that is the locale I have:

There is not a free copy legally available anywhere yet. I have not yet gotten
the program to function on the Mac yet. Closest I have gotten is via PlayInMac,
where the game loads but then the main menu is screwed up and there are no
buttons to click on. Wine itself via bash seems to die with a GLX exception.
Must be almost working though!

Actual problem is due to zip folders in Windows messing up the file name.
It is not a Wine problem- file files being used by Wine were messed up by
unzipping using built in tools

The solution I posted should only be treated as a work-around for people like
me who bought the digital edition
