Running the Starcraft 2 beta installer (either downloaded by the official
Blizzard Downloader, or a third party sharing the game client) results in an
instant security reaction by Ubuntu 9.10, login me out of my session (black
screen, followed by the login one).

It sounds like your X server is crashing, so this is invalid. Also, please
specify Wine version and attach terminal output as per
http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#get_log in the future.
