used fedorautils to install wine with gecko
The following error appears during the installation of picasa38 or picasa39:
err:ntdll:RtlpWaitForCriticalSection section 0x14cbdc "bitblt.c: surface" wait timed out in thread 0026, blocked by 0027, retrying (60 sec)
This happens both on an x86_64 and on a x86 Fedora 16 installation. After the sixty second wait, the installation just dies.

There was a commit (see http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31882#c59) to fix a problem in wine (but it was after 1.5.16). Could you try wine 1.5.17 or newer?
What's your version of libxcb? I think f16 ships only 1.7... could you try version 1.9?
