Summary: Eve Online: Eve Voice audio reception comes out as pure static since RC7 Product: Wine Version: 1.2-rc7 Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: directx-dsound AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: jmorris.nv@gmail.com
I am using kubuntu 10.04.
I just updated wine using the PPA source to Wine RC7. Prior to this release eve voice worked correctly for transmitting and receiving (RC5, RC6, etc)
Now with RC7 upon audio reception, I receive nothing but low pitch static.
Everyone can still hear my audio just fine, so transmitting seems to work fine.
All other audio in the game still works perfectly.

--- Comment #2 from jmorris.nv@gmail.com 2010-07-10 00:21:07 --- I was unable to go directly back to Wine 1.2 RC6, so I went back to the Ubuntu package for 1.1.42, and eve voice works just fine transmitting and receiving.
My vote is for regression as well.

--- Comment #3 from unmacaque@gmail.com 2010-07-10 02:17:21 --- I also had problem with crackling audio in multiple apps with 1.2rc7 from PPA. I found all revisions during regression testing had working audio. I then tried a fresh build of 1.2rc7 from source tarball and it also worked. It seems to me that the problem lies with the Ubuntu package. Until that problem is fixed either build rc7 yourself or use the rc6 package for karmic as long as it is still there.

I have the same problem with Crazy Taxi's sound and Ubuntu PPA's rc7 packages. RC6 just works fine, as previous releases had as well.

For me it's a very bad bug while game like Call of Duty 4 , Fallout 3 don't have any sound except a very high noise .
Like José said, RC6 just works fine, as previous releases had as well.

It's not Ubuntu's problem. According to comment #3, this is a problem in the package on the WineHQ PPA:

Wine doesn't provide that PPA, only links to it. The PPA is Ubuntu's. Wine only provides source code, no pre-compiled binaries.

My point was that the package in question is not part of the Ubuntu distribution. It just happens to have been built on a system (Launchpad) that is also used by Ubuntu.
I guess the question is whether the problem lies in the sources that were uploaded by the PPA maintainer, or in the build that was produced by Launchpad. I'm building from sources downloaded from the PPA to see if I can figure that out.
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23588
--- Comment #13 from Forest winehq@tibit.com 2010-07-10 14:57:58 --- Update:
I rebuilt the sources from the WineHQ PPA and the resulting package had the same sound problem, so we can't blame this on Launchpad's build servers.
I also verified that the PPA's .orig.tar.gz file matches the .bz2 file on Wine's sourceforge download page, so it seems the problem is either in the upstream sources or in the PPA's patches / configuration.

--- Comment #14 from billstei billstei@hbci.com 2010-07-10 15:36:37 --- It might be worth noting that I have at least one application which does not exhibit the problem with Ubuntu PPA Wine1.2-rc7, and additionally winecfg on the Audio tab has a "Test Sound" button that seems to be working fine.

Try a diff on the wine/ppa sources.

Try a diff on the wine/ppa sources.
No need. If you want to grovel through those diffs, they're already available as part of every debian/ubuntu source package. Go right ahead:

The only diff I see against wine itself (and not extra debian config stuff) is a hack in dlls/msi for CS3, and changes to winegcc for profile generation, but both of those have been there for a while..
Scott, can you investigate please.

--- Comment #18 from Scott Ritchie scott@open-vote.org 2010-07-10 17:05:16 --- I think it may actually be the profile generation code, I noticed the same problem when I made that change in rc6.
This is even with supplying a blank profile.

--- Comment #19 from Dan Kegel dank@kegel.com 2010-07-10 17:31:46 --- Sounds like it's time to take out the fancy gcc option, then, and investigate it offline. Can you do a micro update of rc7 without it?

Sounds like it's time to take out the fancy gcc option, then, and investigate it offline. Can you do a micro update of rc7 without it?
Bonus points if you try winetest before profiling, note any failures, and rerun with profiling to see what it breaks, then file bugs.
If you can't, ping me, and I'll do it when time permits.

--- Comment #21 from jmorris.nv@gmail.com 2010-07-10 18:03:43 --- I wanted to clarify my initial bug report.
All standard audio in Eve Online works perfectly with the Ubuntu PPA Wine RC7 (read: sound effects)
However, the static occurs upon reception of audio through Eve Voice which I believe is a VoIP product.

--- Comment #22 from Forest winehq@tibit.com 2010-07-10 18:10:24 --- Sound is broken in Dragon Age: Origins with rc7 as well. The launcher button sound effect works, but the splash movie sounds are reduced to low frequency pops, and the menu music is gone.

--- Comment #23 from Scott Ritchie scott@open-vote.org 2010-07-10 19:21:38 --- Confirmed, it was the PGO stuff - disabling it and then trying a local build worked fine.
I've uploaded the new version to the PPA, Launchpad should start building it soon.

--- Comment #24 from Dan Kegel dank@kegel.com 2010-07-10 19:24:06 --- Some detective work is probably now in order, to figure out if it's a strange wine bug, or a compiler bug... but that can wait.

The builds are finished and published. I just pulled the i386 package down from the PPA (after refreshing the Update Manager) and the sound problem is gone.
