Summary: Anarchy Online is very slow in certain areas (< 3fps or 0) Product: Wine Version: CVS/GIT Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: blocker Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: krause.marcel@gmx.net
It's something that's bugging me for a good while, and is also being mentioned in the AppDB article for the game. As I said there it can be "worked around" by using the commercial cedega software, which has other minor problems too, but nothing compared to the slowness under wine.
1. download the free client using bittorrent: http://torrent.funcom.com/torrents/AnarchyOnline_17.6.1_EP0.exe.torrent 2. register a free account: http://register.funcom.com/ 3. Start the game, talk to the neutral recruiter at the island and take the Wompah (teleporter) to Borealis, which will leave you in complete graphical laggyness.
You can also notice the laggyness at the Unicorn Outpost (needs paid expansion content), playershops in the guild cities (paid content too), and a few more places. All of these places are frequently used by the players and visiting them is a major pain of course, but as they're the central places in game, you can't really get around on the long run.
It's not my system causing the lag though, as it works fine with the cedega software.
Specs are: Athlon X2 5000+ 2Gb Ram GeForce 8600GT@256MB 400GB WD harddisk 16MBit/s internet connection

what driver version?
NVIDIA 173.14.05 (latest), but I've had that behaviour with pretty much any driver before that. I'm using the 'fbo' backend of wine.

This is no longer the case. Performance is now awful in certain places (especially Borealis) no matter which display device is selected.

still a bug in current wine?
Yes it is, but it's depending on your graphics card. Using a Nvidia GTX 460 Ti the problem is there. Going back to an older GTX 275 there are no slow areas any more.
I guess it has something to do with shaders and/or may be a driver problem. Maybe a developer can say more about this.
In both cases I used the binary Nvidia driver, version up from 275 to 280.13 on a 64bit system.
I will stay on the GTX 275 until this problem is resolved.

The only difference I can see is the OpenGL version used. Maybe someone can shed light on this...
Borealis is unplayable /w the GTX 470. I tested a GTX 560 Ti too, same result.

--- Comment #19 from Drew liquidzoo@gmail.com --- It is still an issue and I have confirmed with 2 completely different setups today that the issue does not exist (or at least is not as prevalent) in 1.5.31 (installed through PlayOnLinux as the .deb is no longer available in Mint 17's repos).
As soon as I can figure out how to run a debug trace for you, I will post one.

--- Comment #20 from hanska2@luukku.com --- You shouldnt use playonlinux at all when you report bugs or attach debug logs...and also that version you used is really old now.

You shouldnt use playonlinux at all when you report bugs or attach debug logs...and also that version you used is really old now.
I'm not reporting the bug with playonlinux, I am saying that I was able to resolve this issue using it.
I would use normal wine (I know the version is old, but it's working where 1.6.x and 1.7.x exhibit this bug) if my distro had this version in their repos anymore. They have 1.6.x and 1.7.26.
The age of the wine version shouldn't have anything to do with this. If I found a version where this game is working well, then something in the newer versions has broken that (for this game). I don't know what, though.
I was asked, on the Anarchy Online forums, to provide this information. I will provide a log from wine-1.7.26 soon (this version was not installed via playonlinux, it was installed via apt-get install wine).
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13685
--- Comment #22 from hanska2@luukku.com --- If something got broken with wine, then someone should do regression testing between the versions. That means compiling wine with different versions and trying if it works. And if it does the regression test shows what commit broke the thing.

--- Comment #27 from Maik Wagner maiktapwagner@aol.com --- Well, I never played the neutral side in this game and never visited Borealis but as far as my two Clans-Soldiers are concerned I am perfectly happy with the performance of the game.
I am using the following chipset and apart from the issue that you can talk to gamemasters in game (Awesomium.dll crashes) the game works fine. I used to give it Platinum status but found out about the gamemastering issue later on. But graphics wise Anarchy Online works very well.

--- Comment #31 from Luke Bratch luke@bratch.co.uk --- There is still a free download available [1] and AO is still very slow in certain areas. Borealis is still the easiest place to reproduce the issue, although it is much faster now than it used to be - this could just be because hardware got a lot faster in the last 10 years! On my current machine I get ~100 FPS in most places in AO but that halves to ~50 FPS in Borealis.
