--- Comment #1 from Lei Zhang thestig@google.com 2008-03-10 01:34:42 --- Is there more to the console output? Typically if Wine crashes, it produces a backtrace.
Severity is not major.

--- Comment #2 from Jerry Heiselman jerry.heiselman@gmail.com 2008-03-10 09:30:24 --- There is no additional output onto the console. I don't know if Wine is crashing or the program is and so Wine exits. Is there a good way for me to know?

When I launch the game (with or without the virtual desktop, I tried several sreen resolutions), the Wine window disappears and I don't get any additional output in the terminal.

Can someone try the demo and report back?
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11963
--- Comment #6 from Boug funmol@hotmail.com 2008-03-12 17:03:29 --- Sorry, but I don't understand why you ask someone to try with the demo !
When people want to play a game, it's the real game, not the demo. Especially when someone who come from Windows like me and wants to play he's games he used to play under Windows.
Could u explain why?
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11963
--- Comment #7 from James Hawkins truiken@gmail.com 2008-03-12 17:09:49 --- Because we, the developers trying to fix this bug, don't own the game, so how can we debug the problem? If you try the demo, and the demo shows the same problem, we can use the (free) demo to debug the problem.

--- Comment #8 from Boug funmol@hotmail.com 2008-03-12 17:14:39 --- Ok,ok ! That was so clear that I didn't thouht about that!
Sorry, but I have a quite slow connection. That game's demo is 269 Mb to download and it's quite big for me.... Someone's volunteer to download and test it please?
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11963
--- Comment #9 from Boug funmol@hotmail.com 2008-03-12 17:32:28 --- Direct link to download the demo (257 MB download).

--- Comment #10 from Jerry Heiselman jerry.heiselman@gmail.com 2008-03-12 23:39:24 --- Unfortunately, the installer for the Myst V Demo does not seem to be working. I get no errors and it doesn't crash, but after the InstallShield Wizard preparation progress bar completes, the window closes and then nothing further happens. I have to quit the Wine virtual desktop window and it does exit without any force (just clicking the close widget on the window).
In light of this, is there anything that I can do to provide more detailed information to help find the root cause of this problem?

--- Comment #12 from Nathan quest2013@emailengine.org 2008-04-01 11:35:11 --- Here is my attempt at figuring this out. I currently use Gobolinux 014.The line about ALSA in the log I attached probably has to do with Gobo. I tried the following command: wine mystvdemo -silent
I got that idea from: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=9302

--- Comment #15 from Nathan quest2013@emailengine.org 2008-10-23 22:32:42 --- I was able to get the demo to install using Wine 1.1.6. During the install, the windows that appear are blank. I needed to install it on Windows Vista first so I knew what keys to type to finish the install.
First dialog box, type Alt O. The next window, Alt N. Then Alt A, Alt N, Alt N, space bar, Alt N, Alt I Wait for install, let "decompressing sounds" finish. Finally, Alt F.
I have screen shots of the different windows that appear during install (using Windows Vista). If needed, I will upload them.

After an install that appeared to finish, this is my console output. The text concerning ALSA is what I usually get when I run programs using Gobolinux 014. I usually have sound on other games even with that ALSA message.

Does it help if you set winversion to Vista?

--- Comment #18 from Nathan quest2013@emailengine.org 2008-10-24 18:37:37 --- Setting the 'Windows Version' via winecfg, on the 'Applications' tab, to Vista, does not appear to work any better than the default Xp setting. I tried several other Windows versions settings and different sound settings. There are many settings and other tweaks I have not tried. No doubt there are many tweaks I do not know about.
I imagine Myst V demo would work on other versions of Windows. I just happened to have Vista on my machine.

The install windows were still blank, but installation finished.
I was able to play a little. At the beginning my character control was overtaken and I was brought next to a man, where scripted dialog and animation is supposed to start. The game effectively stalled at this point. Background animation and sounds were still active, but not the animation and dialog sequence from the man it front of my character. I had to ctrl+alt+backspace to exit the game.

--- Comment #27 from Luke gaming4jc2@yahoo.com 2011-01-15 14:34:25 CST --- Confirming on 1.3.11. I just tested the Demo, I also have the retail version which I believe to be suffering the same issues. I've created two bug reports to make this less complex for wine-devs... MYST V Demo: Installer GUI doesn't appear correctly - http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=25786 MYST V Demo: Black screen after intro movies - http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=25787
There may be other bugs, but so far that's the two critical ones. The latter making the game unrenderable.

This bug is a effectively a meta-bug for several different bugs.
1) Characters freeze and make game unplayable in cutscenes - This is bug 31586 - I can confirm what the above poster said. Characters in the game still do not run even if you manage to get the game is running. The character will spawn and say and do nothing, as the game waits for the animation to stop and it never does - causing a stall. You cannot move. It does not freeze as the fluid and animation appears to be moving even though you can do nothing and it never completes.
2) Demo Installer fails to render correctly is bug 25786 - Someone should test this on wine 1.6-rc4; I am unable to right now.
3) Retail Installer does not work is a reference to bug 19051 - It is not possible to install the retail in my estimation. You can copy it from a Windows install and it will run however.
4) Black screen of death bug after intro appears to have been fixed for me. It was bug 25787 and affected all versions.
