--- Comment #37 from Robert Walker robert_mt_walker@yahoo.co.uk 2012-01-01 04:34:05 CST --- Hi all,
I stumbled upon the "AlwaysOffScreen" registry key (for another game). I gather this WINE "feature" is new.
I thought hmmm... That smearing in the Skybox in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - with Full Dynamic Lighting - looks like it might benefit from this fix (using some kind of reflected light "hack" in the Unreal Engine). Anyway I have a Git compiled version of WINE (1.3.36). I tested out this key enabled and boom S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chenobyl renders near perfectly with Full Dynamic Lighting. I am sure it doesn't look much better on my MS Windows 7 install!!
Screenshots are all on the AppDB page - but I'll stick one here as well.
I'll also provide the registry key file to apply the fix (to make it clear what I mean).

--- Comment #43 from Alexey Loukianov mooroon2@mail.ru 2012-05-25 10:33:54 CDT --- Still present as of current git HEAD (tested with wine-1.5.4-336-g91e95e1) when AlwaysOffscreen is set to "disabled". Changing it to "enabled" fixes the problem of the sky not being updated but I believe that the rendered picture is still incorrect - it seems that bloom effect applied on objects appearing in front of the sky - trees, e.t.c. - is too overscaled. The game world seems to be "unreal" with it, I'd say it looks as if game character had suffered from LSD poisoning.
Robert, Sven, could you please check if the problem I describe affects your systems as well? Posting some screenshots displaying how does the trees in front of the sky looks like in game would be helpful. Also, testing and reporting if the game still suffers from topic bug when AlwaysOffscreen is not enabled wouldn't hurt.

--- Comment #44 from Alexey Loukianov mooroon2@mail.ru 2012-05-25 13:57:38 CDT --- Small followup: the incorrect rendering I've been experiencing could be fixed by turning off GLSL usage (i.e. enabling fallback ARB mode for D3D->OpenGL shaders translation). This makes me believe that the problem might be somewhere in GLSL code generator. It is still required to use AlwaysOffscreen mode for sky to be rendered properly with ARB shaders backend.
Unfortunately turning AlwaysOffscreen on results in problems with some other apps, for example FPS drops dramatically in Braid (with AlwaysOffscreen disabled FPS is smooth 60 @1680x1050, while it drops to around 21-24 FPS after enabling AO). AFAIK turning AlwaysOffscreen isn't expected to produce huge FPS dropdowns so it is most likely a bug. As AO is expected to be turned on by default in future versions of Wine I'm going to file a separate bug report about FPS dropdown problem in Braid.

Don't enable AlwaysOffscreen by default because it garbles buffer shadows in many games (FlyFF, Sudeki...)(In reply to comment #44)

--- Comment #46 from Rico kgbricola@web.de 2012-08-05 04:12:46 CDT --- AlwaysOffscreen is the default as of 09443f14e75e134328643b5d33aff61bdf4dca32 .
@all: Could you please test, if this bug is fixed?
@ax 34noff: Please try the mentioned games and open bug reports, if they show problems with AlwaysOffscreen enabled.

--- Comment #48 from ax 34noff otaku@rambler.ru 2012-08-06 08:24:16 CDT --- in 1.5.10 shadows work perfect but now antialiasing settings in "Nvidia X Server settings" doesn't affect wine games. Is the same problem on ATI and Intel videocards? (some games could use antialiasing only when it is forced in "Nvidia X Server settings")
