Summary: wineprefixcreate, winecfg, programs all fail with errors Product: Wine Version: 0.9.50. Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: critical Priority: P2 Component: wine-winelib AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: eckhaus1@comcast.net
Created an attachment (id=9442) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=9442) Errors from wineprefixcreate and winecfg
After upgrading my working 0.9.49 from the OpenSUSE Build Service to 0.9.50, the attached errors resulted when running wineprefixcreate or winecfg.
I uninstalled and reinstalled same. I renamed my ~./wine and wineprefixcreate had the same errors but had managed to create a new ~./wine directory and files. Since it hadn't fixed anything I replaced it with my original version as it will be nice to keep my installed stuff once/if Wine works again.
I tried uninstalling Wine and compiling 0.9.50. Same results. I did make uninstall and tried compiling the previous 0.9.49 version of which at least the SUSE packaged version had been working previously, but the same errors resulted.
I make uninstalled that and reinstalled the SUSE package from YaST 0.9.50 with, of course, the same errors.
I've tried my programs and all do not run, with the exception of winefile which opens and shows fine for some reason. The wineprefixcreate and winecfg just offer the error messages attached.
Judging by the messages, is this a Wine bug or something wrong with my system configuration? All my Linux software works fine. No problems at all.
In case you're wondering I did try setting compiz-manager to not load at startup and changing xorg.conf to not have the composite extension running. That just resulted in fewer lines in the error messages but Wine still would not work. So I put my Compiz Fusion back so I can use it normally as always.
I hadn't had any problems with running my Wine stuff until yesterday's upgrade, but then I hadn't run anything with it for a few days. See:
http://www.suseforums.net/index.php?showtopic=42750
for a discussion thread I started in the forum, hoping to get any advice. I give more details as far as how I keep my system upgraded daily there. I'd think it would be newer Linux software changing how Wine works (breaking it), but why then would everything else work. Nothing I install is from Factory or experimental repos, although I do use many backport repos for OpenSUSE 10.3 from the Build Service and use Packman OpenSUSE 10.3 packages for my multimedia.
Here's hoping something is obvious based upon those backtraces and you can help me fix the problem.

--- Comment #1 from Vitaliy Margolen vitaliy@kievinfo.com 2007-12-01 15:21:27 --- Looks like a bug in ALSA not Wine. Please install debug symbols for Wine and alsa. Minor because you can disable alsa sound in winecfg/registry. Or just delete/rename winealsa.drv.so

Error with wine-debug package installed
I got wine-debug installed but was unable to install alsa-debug unless I allowed YaST to "upgrade" Alsa back to an older version. The Multimedia-Audio Build Service repo does not contain a matching alsa-debug package for the final new version of Alsa I have installed from there.
But I attached the withdebug.txt that is the result of running wineprefixcreate and then winecfg with the wine-debug package installed.

--- Comment #4 from Dennis Eckhaus eckhaus1@comcast.net 2007-12-01 18:39:03 --- I renamed the /usr/lib/wine/winealsa.drv.so to winealsa.drv.so.old and then wineprefixcreate was able to successfully complete.
The winecfg ran as well, and when I clicked the audio tab it offered to delete the Alsa registry entry as it said the driver was not there. I said no to that in hopes that eventually this will get sorted, perhaps in either another alsa upgrade or a Wine version upgrade. I selected OSS from the choices in winecfg of either OSS or Jack.
My "DreamAquarium" program ran fine with the "bubbles" audio track it plays so I guess the sound is working okay.
But this isn't completely right, correct? I have the full .15 (whatever the rest of the numbers are) release version of Alsa installed, as contained in the OpenSUSE Build Service Multimedia Audio repository. The rest of the audio on my system is using Alsa and working fine. Why is Wine having a problem with it?
Not sure what status this bug should have now, since this solution although getting Wine to work really does not fix the problem of the Alsa driver not working. It just works around it by substituting the OSS driver, which is actually using the alsa-oss wrapper I assume.
So, do you think it is the final released version of Alsa that is the buggy program or Wine's use of it?

--- Comment #5 from Vitaliy Margolen vitaliy@kievinfo.com 2007-12-02 18:55:05 --- So far everything you said points to bug in ALSA and not Wine. Everything works perfectly for me here. You should file bug with suse.

--- Comment #6 from Dennis Eckhaus eckhaus1@comcast.net 2007-12-02 19:37:56 --- Okay, and I see your point since this is an upgrade to Alsa from the backports on Build Service even though it is a release version of Alsa. Plus, things had been fine with previous Alsa versions, even from the backports. It was the upgrade to final Alsa release version that I suppose started the Wine problem.
I'll do a SUSE bug report on it. And I do appreciate your help since your suggestion of renaming the Wine Alsa driver got things back going with Wine for me.
Thanks for the help. :)
