1. install Quicken 2008 2. ???
Does "winetricks msxml3" help?

--- Comment #3 from Buckethead headofbucket@gmail.com 2008-08-20 13:01:19 --- 1. Install 2. Run One-Step Update (Works) 3. Consent to software update to R7 3. Restart Quicken and run one-step update (fails)
winetricks msxml3 changed the error message and gave an error code 6952. I installed msxml6 to see if that helped, No joy.

--- Comment #5 from Bryan Austin other@bja888.com 2009-01-23 20:20:33 --- I was able to successfully install on a virtual Machine, my computer and another computer. All of them where up to date with the Ubuntu Repositories. So I assume they where all running the same versions of everything.
It worked fine on all but my computer. From first run, it opens up a "Setting started with Quicken 2008" window. Before installing msxml3 a alert box cam up and all it said was "Com error". Now it just crashes. Same output in console. I think it is just that one window that is causing troubles.

--- Comment #6 from info@skierpage.com 2009-10-05 20:15:10 --- Quicken 2008 has problems in registration and also in selling an update to Quicken 2009. Both of these can happen during One Step Update.
In later Wine versions, the registration dialog appears but is garbled and unusable (bug 19378). You can stop Quicken trying to register by holding Ctrl and Shift down while choosing Online > One Step Update.
In my experience with wine 1.1.30 with no Wine tricks, Quicken 2008 displays "Com Error" alerts and then crashes when it tries to sell an update to Quicken 2009. By using winecfg to set the Windows Version for qw.exe to Windows 98, those alerts went away. The upgrade offer displayed black but I was able to tell Quicken not to show it any more.
I hope these workarounds help.

--- Comment #7 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2010-05-26 16:03:12 --- This is your friendly reminder that there has been no bug activity for 6 months. Is this still an issue in current (1.2-rc1 or newer) wine?

This is your friendly reminder that there has been no bug activity for 6 months. Is this still an issue in current (1.2-rc1 or newer) wine?
Yes, I have this same problem with Quicken 2010 (Home & Business), Wine 1.3.6 (and earlier), under Ubuntu Lucid. Quicken runs fine except for One Step Update. When I try to update (download financial information), a window pops up titled "Crash" and contains the text "COM Error". The application locks up and an Ubuntu window pops up saying the application has stopped responding. This also happens if I provide a ticker symbol for a new mutual fund; Quicken attempts to retrieve financial data from the Internet. Crash.
I originally installed Quicken using Wine 1.3.1, and followed the instructions posted on WineHQ for Quicken 2010. I've updated to 1.3.6, but not attempted an uninstall/reinstall of Quicken. I'm willing to try anyone's suggestions if it helps the cause.
My PC is a Dell XPS M2010 laptop.

--- Comment #9 from butraxz@gmail.com 2013-05-11 04:54:41 CDT --- No update for over 900 days. No download. Is this still an issue in 1.5.30 or is this abandoned ?

--- Comment #10 from Louis W. Adams, Jr. LouisWAdamsJr@Charter.net 2013-05-24 06:52:07 CDT --- I stopped using Wine, and installed Windows Vista under a virtual machine. That solved my Quicken problem.
