Summary: Imperium Galactica, Solarian Campaign, Crashes frequently Product: Wine Version: 1.0-rc3 Platform: Other OS/Version: other Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P3 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: Makitk@gmail.com
Created an attachment (id=13589) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=13589) Wine 1.0-rc3 crashlog for Imperium Galactica 2, 20080602 @ 01:24am local
When going to either the Spying or Trading views in the Solarian Campaign for Imperium Galactica 2, wine claims something is getting held at level 3 and that a deadlock should be expected, then crashes and offers a "sorry" popup which doesn't appear on screen since the game's graphics 'cover' it. Hence it's unreadable. The deadlock etc is only shown in the konsole when running ig2.exe through it.
The bug can be recreated by running the Solarian Campaign and switching between Spying and Trading screens, or even by switching from the Starmap to either of the two. Another freak occurance along the same lines can be recreated by going to the Spying screen from the Starmap and trying to give the spy (there's only one in the beginning) a training mission before he's moved up front properly yet. (i.e. the 'disc' with available spies is still turning.)
The Kra'hen campaign (which does not have the Spying OR Trading screens) doesn't have an issue with Wine and is playable without any errors as far as I can tell. (I sorta died a long way into the Campaign after the Solarian Fleet decimated my own... time and again.. >_>) I have yet to try the Shinari Campaign, but will see if the problem with the Spying/Trading screens persist there. I do believe they have these screens, with the Kra'hen being the only exception to the rule because of them being a warloving race.

Tried the Shinari Campaign. Problem persists: Spying & Trading screens make Imperium Galactica 2 crash under Wine 1.0-rc3.

I honestly don't know at the moment. I've not touched the game since shortly after logging the bug. I'll refind it and check to see if the problem still occurs. If not, I'll close the bug.

--- Comment #4 from Maki Makitk@gmail.com 2008-12-01 21:48:06 --- Problem still persists in wine 1.1.9, although rather than giving a dialog of the crash, the crash just freezes Wine. I am able to minimize the game window, ending up in 640x480 resolution, but the game simply freezes within seconds of getting to the diplomat screen.
In addition, a sound annoyance is found within the screen with the voice soundbytes on all campaigns. Whenever the soundfile for the explanation of the mission, the tutorial voice, and voices for the units in-game and other system voices are played, they will sound off a heavy 'white noise' as if the soundfile was trying to play a small bit of data interwoven with the audio file or was otherwise corrupt. The whole file does play, but it's quite an annoyance to constantly be interrupted with rather painful white noise.

This bug is still present, I just ran into it with wine version 1.1.20.
What I was doing: loaded savegame, went into espionage screen, clicked around a little bit => crash.
I can reproduce the crash rather easily so please let me know whether you need a log with some particular debug flags.

--- Comment #7 from Titan titian@boxbox.org 2009-11-21 08:39:55 --- I can confirm this bug for versions 1.0.1, 1.1.31 and 1.1.33. I didn't have the gecko extension on version 1.1.33, but the only difference was that some things didn't appear.
If there is a way to help out (I'm on Ubuntu right now, but I'll be switching to Debian soon, where the problem is the same), please tell me how. I'd be glad to help solve this problem as I really want to play this game with all features, and without windows ;).

--- Comment #8 from GyB gyebro69@gmail.com 2010-05-09 12:31:13 --- Created an attachment (id=27827) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=27827) crashlog running under winedbg
The issue still exists in Wine-1.1.44. The demo version also shows the same crash on the Spying/Diplomacy screens.
Link to the demo: http://www.fileplanet.com/35911/30000/fileinfo/Imperium-Galactica-II
How to reproduce the crash in the demo: 1. Start the demo, select 'Single Player' > 'Scenario' > choose the first scenario. 2. When the game is loaded press <F7> to get to the Spying screen. 3. Scroll through the available agent list, give him a new mission...the game will freeze in a short period of time.
This is a long-standing bug, I went back as far as wine-0.9.33, the same crash happens in every tested version. The crash always happens on the same screens (Spying/Diplomacy), but the generated backtraces varies from time to time, depending whether the game is started w/o sounds, which scenario you chose, what graphical details were set ingame etc. I'm not a programmer at all, but isn't it somewhat heap related?
The attached log was created when the game was started with audio disabled. I added WINEDEBUG=-d3d7 to eliminate printing the millions of fixmes: 'err:d3d7:IDirect3DDeviceImpl_3_GetRenderState Unexpected texture stage state setup, returning D3DTBLEND_MODULATE - likely erroneous'. They're present right after starting the game and I don't think it has something to do with the crash: the game doesn't crash if you don't use the mentioned Spying or Diplomacy screens.
I think starting the game with the right debug channels would reveal more info for an expert than the generated backtrace...if I knew which channels should be enabled.

--- Comment #9 from Christopher May maquis196@yahoo.co.uk 2011-01-02 18:00:11 CST --- I also confirm this bug is still present in 1.3.10. HOWEVER the following seems to apply;
If ddraw is set to opengl, windows version set to XP and the ig2nt.exe file used to run the game the error doesn't seem to crash the game itself, it does seem to still happen every now and then so I'd suggest saving before using the usual crash screens but the last couple of games I played allowed me to go in, use the spy screen and leave without a problem.
Another note is that when this crash hits, the game itself crashes rather then wine, the game will say it crashed and made a crash-autosave with wine still happily running.
PS - I also disabled strictdrawordering.
Outside of that, made no changes/dll changes.
Cheers, Maquis196

Hi all,
unfortunately I was wrong: the bug is still present into 1.3.28, simply it occurs not at the first click but after some minutes of playing.
Another problem is that the game on the colony view is really choppy, almost unplayable in big colonies and so... IG2 is not a game for wine.
Anyway the game works perfectly in Windows 7 itself by using Win98 compatibility mode on the exe.
Maybe old direct7 have some issue with wine.

--- Comment #14 from GyB gyebro69@gmail.com 2012-03-13 14:31:05 CDT --- I retested IG2 with Wine-1.4 and the problem seems to be no longer present. I tested both the demo version and the retail/CD version.
The crash/freezing problem was fixed by http://source.winehq.org/git/wine.git/commitdiff/f20e07b77bec5863e71141cfe62...
Unfortunately, this particular commit now causes visual glitches in the game.
Please retest with Wine-1.4 or newer and confirm the fixed state.

Can confirm that the game doesn't crash in either spying or trading screens (Thanks so much for that).
The attached is how the background on the starmap looks now. If the starmap is played top down then you don't see anything wrong, game gets a bit laggy in certain areas but not so much it gets in the way.
Could argue this bug is fixed and open up another bug for the graphical problems or should they be apart of this bug report?
