wine seems to have come along way, especially for running steam and steam
games.

but it seems silly that the first problem everyone comes across trying to run
steam with a fresh wine is that no fonts appear.

this is because steam asks for tahoma.ttf and that isn't on most linux
installations. So steam starts up with blanks where words should be.

you only have to google to realise the workaround.

but it would make wine alot cooler if it simply used a different font that was
available on the system instead of tahoma.

then many linux users wouldn't hit this first obstacle when trying to run steam

Wine does provide the Tahoma replacement, does you Wine installation have it?

i am using ubuntu 7.10 and the wine package that comes with that gave me the
blank text on steam.

Sorry that is not version 0.9.56 but 0.9.48 (from memory)

There was certainly no tahoma replacement in that version.

Tahoma replacement was introduced in Wine 0.9.47. What does refrain you
from testing a newer Wine version, or just released 0.9.57?

Dmitry,

I've just checked on another ubuntu machine. Ubuntu 7.10 comes with wine
0.7.46, which is one version less than the bug was fixed. I'm sure it has been
fixed.
