--- Comment #1 from koz.ross@retro-freedom.nz --- This also happens for the Might and Magic 7 installer, but does not produce the installer errors as described here.

--- Comment #3 from koz.ross@retro-freedom.nz --- This has been an issue for me since _at least_ Wine 3.0 - this is just the first time I chased it up properly.

--- Comment #4 from Béla Gyebrószki gyebro69@gmail.com --- The error messages at the end of installation should be treated as a bug in Wine, but they don't result in a broken installation (they are exist in most of the installers from GOG.com). In fact, I installed both MM6 and MM7 from GOG.com and the games are fully playable despite of the installer errors. There must be something else that causing your problem.
Please attach terminal output when you are trying to start the game. http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#get_log

--- Comment #5 from koz.ross@retro-freedom.nz --- Bela: I _very_ much doubt this is an issue on my end. This is for several reasons. Firstly, the log you requested shows nothing amiss of the sort that ought to cause problems:

Secondly, I have seen this on at least three different installations, all of different distros, and different versions of Wine going back at least two major releases, if not three. Unless you suspect there's some consistent issue with my setup, but then I can't _imagine_ what that could be.
Thirdly, I have gotten this on both of those games, consistently, for all said platforms. Maybe I'm just terminally unlucky, but this doesn't look like an issue that's just specific to my current install.

Either enter the game directory first and launch the game from there: WINEARCH=win64 WINEPREFIX=/home/koz/.gog/mm6 wine MM6.exe
or if you prefer starting the game from elsewhere: WINEARCH=win64 WINEPREFIX=/home/koz/.gog/mm6 wine start /unix ~/.gog/mm6/drive_c/GOG\ Games/Might\ and\ Magic\ 6/MM6.exe

--- Comment #7 from koz.ross@retro-freedom.nz --- Ah, so I have to use absolute paths, or be in the same directory as the executable? I didn't know that - thank you for clarifying! I can confirm that this works.

Yes, you usually have to "cd" into the game directory, it's a pretty common pitfall. For reference, it's mentioned at https://wiki.winehq.org/Wine_User%27s_Guide#How_to_run_Windows_programs_from... which is also linked from the FAQ.
Glad that helped, resolving the bug.
