Bug ID: 54932 Summary: Fallout 3: Black screen when using the experimental wow64 mode Product: Wine Version: 8.8 Hardware: x86-64 OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: major Priority: P2 Component: -unknown Assignee: wine-bugs@winehq.org Reporter: m1m1k4tz@protonmail.com Distribution: ---
When I try to play fallout 3 or new Vegas I get a black box with no audio. Space Cadet Pinball x86 works fine though. I also tried using dxvk but that didn't help.

--- Comment #5 from Zeb Figura z.figura12@gmail.com --- "Experimental" wow64 is currently not in a state where it can run any but the simplest graphical applications, so I don't think it's particularly interesting to test it yet.

I'm probably ignorant, but the launcher for fallout and the steam app are 2d so it would seem like those would be simple apps. I'm guessing since pinball was a SDL app though that would probably change things.

I'm not actually sure that any graphical applications run right now. There's a lot of GDI that's kind of broken with new wow64.

Using the debug env variable WINEDEBUG=+gdi confirms that this is a gdi application but I'm not sure if that's the problem, steam also uses gdi aswell from what I've read.

SDL apps seem to run fine for other people as well, so I think its probably a GDI thing too https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=54442

Also, I didn't hear the music that usually plays in the launcher either so I'm not sure if that's related to the game files not being detected

--- Comment #17 from m1m1k4tz m1m1k4tz@protonmail.com --- I went thru and added WINEDEBUG=warn+all maybe that will give some more information why it can't see the game files I also tried to start the exe from the game directory and that helped get past some errors in portal 2 but both that and fallout still don't launch into the game

--- Comment #23 from m1m1k4tz m1m1k4tz@protonmail.com --- Okay I Just tried a fix from the third post in this thread and it worked https://steamcommunity.com/app/22370/discussions/0/598198356177372106/ Basically you create the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Bethesda Softworks\fallout3 with the string value Installed Path and for the data you put the location of your install directory and you need a \ at the end or it won't work. It looks like there's a few bugs that prevent me from getting past the character creation screen though. On New Vegas it looks like the issue there is Steam so I'll try to install it from the Steam client running under wine instead of using the files from the linux Steam client.

--- Comment #24 from m1m1k4tz m1m1k4tz@protonmail.com --- I'll mark this as closed because the game works fine with dxvi and the gstreamer merge request. I think the other issues with source games are unrelated. It's weird that the registry fix isn't needed for the old wow64 mode though.

Nothing was fixed in Wine.
It was mostly fixed in the mr that fixed gdi programs I'm pretty sure and the upcoming fix for gstreamer in wow64. I just found out a registry key fix that lets you run the game in wow64. I thought it would be good to make a new bug ticket since it's pretty much 100% playable now. It's probably another issue for source games. There are still issues with wined3d probably since the game only works fine with dxvk for me so it might be best to leave this open anyway though.

Sure, we can close this when the winegstreamer patches are merged (although, yes, it'd still be nice to have something tracking wined3d bugs, whether that's this bug or another one).
