Summary: Unable to run XCOM in Wine Product: Wine Version: unspecified Platform: Other OS/Version: other Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: enhancement Priority: P2 Component: wine-files AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: magsymp@yahoo.com
Hello,
I am running the most recent version of Wine on Ubuntu Feisty Fawn with all the most recent updates. (I've even tried fresh install of Wine and Ubuntu)
My problem is that I am unable to get X Com UFO Defence to work with Wine. The game will launch but the keyboard does NOT work. I've have extensive troubleshooting but I can't get the keyboard to work. I have even had someone else try to get it working (someone with alot of experience with Wine) and they said that they were not able to get the keyboard working either (different PC and all).
I have tried setting up a launcher script and had no success... same issue. I've tried virtual KBs and those don't work either. I've even tried a KB which should push input to all sessions but even that does NOT work.
I have tried to run the game in terminal, in seperate window, but the KB will NOT work... or the game won't launch.
I've tried 3 different install packages for the game and still no success.
Other games work, and the keyboard works in them with no problems.
Game is now abondonware and is available at
http://www.abandonia.com/games/38/UF...emyUnknown.htm
or
http://www.the-underdogs.info/downlo...ld.zip&id=4966
Any investigation or input would be appreciated.
Thanks

"This program cannot be run in DOS mode".

--- Comment #3 from Matt Wrenn cogadh@comcast.net 2007-09-29 17:30:09 --- There is a DOS and a Windows version of the game. The links provided were for the Win version of it.

--- Comment #6 from Mick Saunders kamikaze1@gmail.com 2007-10-20 03:45:10 --- Confirmed. This also occurs for me on Fedora 8 test3. RPM install of wine: wine-0.9.46-1.fc8
Also, in the wine configuration I have noticed if I untick 'Allow the window manager to control the windows' and tick 'Emulate a virtual desktop', then when the game runs inside a small 320x200 window, the keyboard works for the game so long as the mouse cursor is positioned _outside_ of the virtual desktop. The game still isn't very playable like this though.

--- Comment #7 from knan-wine@anduin.net 2008-09-23 12:28:20 --- Could this be another manifestation of bug 8854 ? Try the hack in comment #3 of that bug, or try 0.9.28...
The game's not abandonware anymore, but sold on Steam - as dos version in dosbox. The Windows version does not work on Vista, only up to XP.

--- Comment #8 from John P Sims jsims2359@gmail.com 2009-09-22 00:40:32 --- FWIW, the Steam version of XCOM works great. Can we close this? I mean, if the bug title is "Unable to run XCOM in Wine" and you can, in fact, run the Steam version of XCOM in Wine, does that justify closing the bug?
wine-1.1.29

wine-1.1.29
not if you can still reproduce the original bug with the non-steam version

In 2009 Steam version was reported to be working but standalone no. There is also a dos version, that could be ran on Dosbox. So all in all, shouldnt this be closed as fixed ?

--- Comment #13 from Béla Gyebrószki gyebro69@gmail.com --- The Steam version contains both the DOS and Windows versions, I tested the Windows version in 1.7.36.
The game is running at a very low screen resolution and the screen is flickering like mad (probably bug #35718).
The mouse works but not the keyboard in the game.
The patch from wine-staging fixes the keyboard issue: https://github.com/wine-compholio/wine-staging/blob/master/patches/dinput-Ev...
