Summary: Soul Reaver 2 no longer starts with wine 0.9.49 Product: Wine Version: 0.9.49. Platform: PC-x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: test AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: fuag155555@gmail.com CC: fuag155555@gmail.com
Soul reaver 2 will no longer start with wine 0.9.49.
The italien version of the game was working with 0.9.48, i no longer have this to test, but i bought the english version and now it will not start up without any error messages on wine 0.9.49. It does install though.
I'm on kubuntu 7.10, amd64, and a gefroce 8600 gts.

--- Comment #1 from Ben Hodgetts (Enverex) ben@atomnet.co.uk 2007-11-22 11:48:10 --- Have you tried a NoCD patch? That is the usual reason something doesn't open and gives no error messages.

--- Comment #2 from Michael Boone fuag155555@gmail.com 2007-11-22 11:55:36 --- I have tried a no cd patch for version 1.0, but i cant find any on gameburnworld, gamefix or gamecopy world for any other english versions. The italien version worked without any no-cd patch.

--- Comment #3 from L. Rahyen mail@science.su 2007-11-22 12:08:02 --- Full version of Soul Reaver 2 (English version) does start for me without problems (with current git). Try this:
mv ~/.wine{,.backup} wine setup.exe cd ~/.wine/Games/Soul\ Reaver\ 2/ wine sr2.exe
Does this help?
Don't know do I have nocd crack installed or not (because my brother installed the game not I) but game works without CD for me.

Soul reaver 2 will no longer start with wine 0.9.49.
Do a regression testing as described here: http://wiki.winehq.org/RegressionTesting

--- Comment #5 from Michael Boone fuag155555@gmail.com 2007-11-22 16:14:59 --- I cant do regression testing but i suspect it has to do with some mess ups in my registry that i have no clue how to fix. If i try from a fresh .wine directory, it installs fine and starts to run but nomatter how many no-cd patches i try it claims I need to insert the original cd.
If i put back my old wine directory again and reinstall, it acts the same as before, no errors, nothing starts. any ideas on why it would be messed up with my old .wine directory or how to fix it. I cant install everything i had in my old wine directory without devoting a day or 2 to it.. :'

--- Comment #7 from Michael Boone fuag155555@gmail.com 2007-11-24 12:04:28 --- I figured today I would try to tackle the registry issue by using diffs from a reg export of a fresh .wine directory and one after the install of soul reaver 2 and then attempting to replace my orig soul reaver 2 registry etrys with those. However, the game would not start on a fresh install anymore either, and it never detects the cd correctly.
I will continue to attempt regression tests but wine will not compile wiht the first regression due to something about push and pop pre processor commands. If i run the game in windows 98 mode (it was made for 95/98) it says try nt40 or win 3.1, however it wont run in those and if i run it in xp it used to run fine but now copy protection fails all the time, and more recently wont even prompt me for the correct cd, just nothing happens and it glitches out.
Tried with no-cd cracks.

--- Comment #8 from Vitaliy Margolen vitaliy@kievinfo.com 2007-11-24 12:49:15 --- Wine is beta. If your program works when you remove ~/.wine directory then it is NOT A BUG. Closing INVALID.
DO NOT REOPEN
If you still having problems with starting the game SECOND TIME without touching registry OR ANY OTHER FILES. Then open new bug and be clear WHAT you did and WHAT doesn't work.

--- Comment #11 from Michael Boone fuag155555@gmail.com 2007-11-24 14:37:02 --- Sorry for the hostility, i thought you were the same as someone who was riding me about posting the output in the bug report on a previouse post and I made this one before he got to me to tell me not to post it in the original post. I'm gonna try to be as clear as possible.
I moved my .wine foldier to .wine_backup. Then i ran a winecfg to get default config back. I then installed the game under windows xp and attempted to run it. Nothing happened. I installed the updates and tried to run it. Nothing happened. I added the no cd crack and tried to run it. Nothing happened. I tried this process another 3 times to make sure that it would provide similar results.
Now it is a valid bug as it happens with a "fresh" install of wine 0.9.49.
I am re-opening the bug, i hope my reasoning is correct and this is a valid bug.

I then installed the game under windows xp
Then this bug INVALID. What you are doing isn't supported by Windows too. You MUST install the game on WINE.
If you installed the game in one installation of Windows XP - it's unlikely to work with other installation of Windows XP (and even if it will - this isn't supported). Why do you think that WINE should work differently?
For me full version of the game is fully working (only bug I see is 10477 but this is unrelated) if installed with current git in clean WINE prefix directory (I didn't tried without no-cd patch however).

--- Comment #14 from Michael Boone fuag155555@gmail.com 2007-11-24 15:08:27 --- I meant i installed it ith wine's windows mode set to windows xp, installation works under wine's windows mode set to xp or 98 or 2000 so far, for as much as i can tell.
but i installed it under WINE with the windows emulation mode set to windows xp, not xp.

--- Comment #15 from Michael Boone fuag155555@gmail.com 2007-11-24 15:49:06 --- Ok, my problem with the fresh installs was that i was updating them all to version 1.2 before testing, i just redid a fresh install testing every step of the way.
Version 1.0 works with our without a no-cd patch.
Version 1.2 does not work with or without a no-cd patch.
thats probably what was causing all the confusion.

--- Comment #16 from Vitaliy Margolen vitaliy@kievinfo.com 2007-11-24 15:57:47 --- Ok so the game's patch 1.2 broke it. This is not Wine regression, unless v1.2 worked for you with older Wine version.
Also I'm assuming you used "no-cd" patch for v1.2?

--- Comment #17 from Michael Boone fuag155555@gmail.com 2007-11-24 16:12:40 --- yes, although the no-cd patches i can find for the english versions (search gameburnworld, gamecopyworld, gamefix, and freeinformationsociety) Dont appear to work, it still prompts for the cd, except for version 1.2 which just does nothing.

--- Comment #18 from Michael Boone fuag155555@gmail.com 2007-11-24 16:14:32 --- Although this is still a bug, i'm happy with version 1.0 working, as far as i know, all 1.2 added was some configurability to controls etc, i was running the regression testing before i realized it was version 1.2 that was causing the problem.
