Summary: Soldat: crashes and banned for cheatin Product: Wine Version: CVS/GIT Platform: Other URL: http://www.soldat.pl/links/mirrors.php?catid=5 OS/Version: other Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: flieslikeabrick@gmail.com CC: elephanthunter@gmail.com
Created an attachment (id=11321) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=11321) Screenshot of the error
Soldat's anticheat engine, BattlEye, crashes after a short amount of online gameplay in a BE-enabled server. It crashes with the error "External Exception 80000004" and Soldat must be killed from the command line. Clicking OK in the error message just causes it to come up again.
This does not happen in single-player (offline play) or in servers without BE enabled.
More information from other players can be found in this thread: http://www.soldatforums.com/index.php?topic=8.msg236228#msg236228
A screenshot is attached.

--- Comment #1 from Ryan Rawdon flieslikeabrick@gmail.com 2008-03-11 10:22:29 --- It should also be noted that the player is banned from the server after this happens, further indicating that this is BE-related

--- Comment #3 from Leetux leetux@o2.pl 2008-04-15 16:01:12 --- I've hit Enter when clicking on Soldat window [in windowed mode] some times and it appears that Soldat is not freezing, there are only invisible errors under game's window, or something like that. So after doing that I've been kicked and I've seen a reason in chat: "*SERVER* BattlEye server: Major: Client not responding. Major has been kicked for BattlEye violation." Client not responding could mean that BattlEye is not launching or something blocks its Internet access.

--- Comment #4 from sqweek sqweek@gmail.com 2008-05-04 05:21:44 --- Note that the bug only happens with the updated Battleye. Using a fresh install of soldat (don't forget to wipe %appdata%/Soldat), the battleye client initialises fine. But of course, it's not the same version the server is running, so it goes and downloads the update. As soon as it finishes and initialises the new battle eye client, you get the external exception. If you hamstring BE's update process (eg by making %appdata%/Soldat/Battleye/BEClient_x86.dll owned by root and non-writable), then the update doesn't succeed - you get to play a bit longer before the server kicks you with "Battleye client not responding".
Though I guess this isn't necessarily version related. At any rate, it rules out any battleye connection problems - the update code path works fine, it's just the anti-cheat code path that blows up. -sqweek

--- Comment #8 from sado gsado92@gmail.com 2009-05-03 11:56:20 --- Although things have changed in Soldat 1.5 a little bit, game still crashes or server kicks me for cheating - BattlEye upgrades itself in multiplayer, but then gives me Access Violation. When I restart the game I can join the server and stay there for a few seconds, but later it kicks me with reason: *SERVER* BattlEye Server: sado: WinAPI Hook #0, sometimes before kicking it gives some (sometimes one, sometimes lots of) External Exception 80000003 errors. I wonder how it's possible some people suffer from this bug, but some don't (at least they don't mention it in test data). I'm using Gentoo and Wine 1.1.20, by the way.

--- Comment #9 from sqweek sqweek@gmail.com 2009-05-04 04:23:01 --- I'm skeptical about the good reports... one of the test results mentions that "connecting to the internet" wasn't attempted. I'm yet to see any report (either on the appdb or soldat forums) that explicitly claims success online. Every time a statement like "it works great" is questioned, it is inevitably clarified with "offline, against bots". -sqweek

I'm skeptical about the good reports...
Probably because not all servers use BattlEye, so some users will not be concerned with this bug report.

if the anti-hacking tool has been permanently removed from clients and servers there is no need to keep this bug open (not reproducible anymore). It's probably better to mark this 'abandoned' as the original issue is not fixed.
