This used to be tracked in bug 25857, which is closed now. Game works fine, when d3dx9_34.dll is set to native.
Setting d3dx9_34.dll to builtin in wine-2.7 produces, after initial splash screen, only black screen with correct mouse cursor.

The situation with wine-5.18 is as follows:
-- With everything builtin:
I can get to the main menu, but it crashes when clicking 'Single Player'. -> See cpcw1.txt (+d3dx)
-- With builtin d3dx9_34 but native d3dcompiler_47:
The log suggests the game gets further but still crashes at the same point. -> See cpcw2.txt (+d3dx)
-- With native d3dx9_34 (everything else builtin):
I can hear the mission intro starting, but the screen is garbled.
-- With native d3dx9_34 and native gdiplus:
The intro loads and everything seems to work. -> I will report a bug for builtin gdiplus separately.
