Summary: DragonRiders: main character, dragon and sky appear black Product: Wine Version: 1.0-rc3 Platform: Other URL: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version &iId=8946 OS/Version: other Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: enhancement Priority: P2 Component: directx-d3d AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: rainmaker@icgag.it
Created an attachment (id=13574) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=13574) How it looks in Wine
The main character and the dragon in the DragonRiders game appear completely black except for their eyes, as if they had no texture applied (check the attached screenshots). From a bird's view of the village at the beginning, it looks like the sky suffers from the same problem. I couldn't verify whether this applies to other characters in the game as well or not, since I only played for a few minutes.
The same bug happens in Cedega as well.
I can only guess it's some kind of chroma key problem (as the one in Ultima IX), but the game cannot be configured with respect to that. The only hint is a debug error that floods the console (check attached log):
err:d3d_surface:IWineD3DBaseSurfaceImpl_BltFast DXTC decompression not supported by now
but I don't know if it might be related. There's also a message concerning an unsupported Stippled Alpha feature.

What video card / driver version are you using?
Sorry, forgot to mention that... The video card is a GeForce FX 5200, and it always gave me this problem (the same issue happened in Cedega before the game worked in Wine) whatever version the driver was. The current version of the driver is 173.14.05.
I'll try with another pc with an ATI card as soon as I can to see if it happens there as well.

Just checked with an ATI (Radeon X700) and the same thing happens.

--- Comment #6 from Lorenzo Miniero rainmaker@icgag.it 2008-06-07 06:09:56 --- Just some additional details. It looks like not only the characters and the sky have this problem. I've seen the game running under XP, and I could verify it happens also for at least:
* the main menu (in Wine only an orange fog is visible on a black background, but in the game there's actually a static picture under the fog); * the loading screen (in Wine you can only see some small coloured circles lighting on, while in XP these circles are part of a drawn dragon medallion).
So probably the same bug affects many parts of the game. I can also confirm that the bug is still there with rc4.

Current Specs: Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 32bit Wine 1.0rc5 ATI Radeon X1650 512MB PCI-E Ati FGLRX 8.493 drivers
Testing done: Have tested with opensource radeonhd drivers and mesa, this bug does not occur with that configuration.
Hope this helps.

That's not the same game. Anyway, it does not seem in work in Wine: it requires .NET, which I installed with winetricks but didn't help.
About DragonRiders, I just tried again and now it crashes while starting: a brief phase of the loading process can be seen (the colored globes) and then it crashes. I tried with the latest version I have (wine-1.1.41) but I don't know when it stopped working. I'll try with 1.1.44 and check if it has been fixed in the meanwhile.

Same error in 1.1.44... apparently a ddraw error, according to the backtrace

Apologies for the delay, I couldn't find the installation CD.
Just tried again with wine-1.9.12 (Staging) on my Fedora 23 and, while some things seem to have changed, the problem appears to be pretty much the same. I see some movement now in the menu, but the dragon is basically transparent, background in the menu is still black, the sky in the intro is still black, so are the characters, etc. Anyway as you can see from the new screenshot, now the character isn't ALL black, but has some artifacts over it. This may have something to do with either fixes in wine, or the different card I have on my machine now (GeForce GTX 970).
The text I see on the console has changed too, now I see a series of
err:d3d:wined3d_surface_upload_data >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> GL_INVALID_OPERATION (0x502) from Upload compressed surface data @ surface.c / 1094 err:d3d:wined3d_debug_callback 0x146690: "GL_INVALID_OPERATION error generated.".
Hope this helps!

Created attachment 56012 [details] DragonRiders on wine-1.9.12
I don't know how interested you are to try the game so short delays, but 1.9.12 is really outdated by now, it's not even the latest stable anymore. Latest stable starts with 2 and latest released development versions is 2.8 (and staging 2.8). If it doesnt work full log with more recent wine could help. And if it doesnt show anything interesting, maybe with some channel enabled it could expose the issue. But just testing with more recent wine would be a good starting point.

Yep, that comment was from months ago. I updated to Fedora 25 since, where the shipped Wine version is 2.7. I'll try with that as soon as I can and let you know if it's still an issue.
