Bug ID: 39337 Summary: Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver - game crashes at start Product: Wine Version: 1.7.51 Hardware: x86-64 OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown Assignee: wine-bugs@winehq.org Reporter: DanBrake0819@freenet.de Distribution: ---
Created attachment 52417 --> https://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=52417 Logfile of the unpatched version
The game crashes at start and gives me this message: "The program kain2.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close."
Patching the game with the official 1.2 patch doesn't help. With the "Unofficial Windows XP Patch" I'm able to get access to the config menu at the beginning, but the game still gives me the same error message when attempt to play the game.

--- Comment #6 from Anastasius Focht focht@gmx.net --- Hello folks,
confirming. This seems to be an old ddraw based game.
There is a launch dialog which allows to select game resolution from a number of available desktop resolutions.

Regardless of initial virtual desktop resolution and selected resolution from the launcher dialog, it switches to 640x480 16bpp for video playback. Unfortunately it uses the desktop resolution for blanking the screen. With resolutions being > 640x480 this writes past the allocated surface/buffer, causing page fault.
The following works around (or any lower resolution available):
--- snip --- $ wine explorer /desktop=foo,640x480 ./kain2.exe --- snip ---
The game will switch to desired resolution selected from launch dialog after playing the intro video in 640x480.

Hello folks,
attached is trace log (including snoop to show what the game graphics engine/layer actually tries to do). To reduce size/noise I filtered only for the relevant thread (tid 0028). Uncompressed size 3.6M

--- Comment #8 from PelzR DanBrake0819@freenet.de --- I had the oppurtunity to test this and you're right. I've set the virtual desktop resolution exactly to 640x480 and the game works now.
Thanks for the tip. At least it is now possible to play the game.
