thanks for your quick reply. I knew I was forgetting something:

Using a (Hercules) Radeon 9700 Pro video card. Have the open-source drivers
(xorg-video-ati or something) installed, as the proprietary AMD-ATI fglrx
drivers (8.12) apparently refuse to be correctly installed right now. Not sure
if that affects this issue, I thought they are non-related issues.

Apart from that, I have an AMD Athlon 64 3000 with 1024 MB Ram. Was always able
to run DoW on my Windows configuration, so assumed it wouldn't be that much of
a problem for linux either (hardware-wise).
