As it says it crashes on launch - dumps some server response data in terminal
and then dies.

I can start it with no issues. But if I check for updates via menu it crashes.

Hello folks,

the download references version 1.6.6 which doesn't exhibit the crash on start.

Since the crash was reported with 1.6.3 please retest that exact version with
recent Wine (and if possible provide a download for that old version).

Identifies itself as 1.6.3 in Help->About and its PE resource version
information "FileVersion" field, comes as a ZIP file containing a directory of
many files that runs without installation, and doesn't crash on startup

PE resource version information has no "FileVersion", and "ProductVersion" is
3.1. ZIP file contains a single EXE file ResEdit-win32.exe, which crashes on
startup, possibly while making some web request.
