Simply put, the menu for the game will open but it has trouble running the actual game.

the game works fine here.
As already said: It's advised to use 'Virtual Desktop' mode for old DDraw games.
On startup, the game displays a selection dialog 'Multiple 3D cards available' with the following options:
--- snip --- * display, DirectDraw HAL * \.\DISPLAY1, NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX --- snip ---
My card is not recognized hence Wine's default GF8800.
Both options work. Intro videos are shown and the main menu/in-game graphics works.
