If the game worked in a previous version of Wine then it sounds like a regression.
Do you remember the last Wine version that the game worked on?

--- Comment #2 from Brian_d_n Tropicalhero@hotmail.com --- Possibly 1.9.13 trying to infer that from my saved games and update history in Software Center. Definitely in 1.9.12 as that was the version I had when i updated everyone on my success in getting it to run in the first place.

Alright. Do you know how to do a regression test?

Also, can you post the terminal output as the game loads and crashes? Maybe there is something in there too.

Command: $ wine Civ4warlords.exe &>console_log.txt
Returned to last auto save before prior crash, played well past the point of the last crash.

--- Comment #9 from Brian_d_n Tropicalhero@hotmail.com --- I'm not sure it's clear from Comment * but I did play until the game crashed out. I attached the backtrace and output so you would have a set from one event.

--- Comment #10 from Brian_d_n Tropicalhero@hotmail.com --- Wine updated to 1.9.17 over the weekend, the crash issue persists. Attaching new backtrace and output. Same behavior, start a new game plays for a good long time then the crash.

Hi Brian,
Since Civ IV is a somewhat open ended game, can you define what is "mid game" in your scenario? I've just received Civilization IV myself and I'd like to try and see if I can find the regression but I need to know the approximate conditions required to reproduce the issue :)
Thanks!

--- Comment #18 from Brian_d_n Tropicalhero@hotmail.com --- Sorry I haven't checked back in a while...recently upgraded my system to 16.04 Wine is running 1.9.22 crash issue persists. Fjfrackiewicz I can up load a game save as well as backtrace and console output if that helps...Or I can email directly to you.

The problem may have been a pulseaudio upgrade in your system, do you remember updating it recently? Maybe upgrading to a newer version could also solve the issue.

Can you run the following command in your terminal?
pulseaudio --version
That should show the version of pulseaudio you have on your system :)

Any chance you can update to 9.0 without having to go with unknown PPAs?

Well, the last option might be to upgrade to Ubuntu 16.10 since that is the first version to have pulseaudio 9.0:
