--- Comment #2 from Benjamin Debski benjamin.debski@gmail.com 2008-06-01 05:13:50 --- I don't have Warcraft 3 but this dose happen to me in a few other games. After downgrading back to wine 0.9.59 I found that the problem still occurs which leads me to believe that it might be something to do with Arch Linux which we are both running. On further investigation setting alsa hardware acceleration to emulation seams to behave alsa work in a similar fashion to oss, that is to say that alsa no longer plays the splash screen sound but now the ingame sounds works.

--- Comment #3 from Matthias Liertzer linux@liertzer.at 2008-06-07 08:49:15 --- This problem seems to be a general problem with direct sound and alsa. I have two games where the sound stops after a while. ( Deus Ex and ORF Fussball Challenge 08 ) It stops spontaneously, so it's hard to reproduce. Sometimes it stops after one minute, sometimes after 2 hours( That is in the case of Deus Ex; it seems to depend in which level you are currently in(other sound effects??) )
I only tested it with alsa, so I can't confirm, if it's working with OSS.
My distribution is gentoo and I'm using the latest release candidate(1.0_rc4).
Problem occurred for me for the first time as well with wine 1.0_rc1. (As I used 0.9.59(worked fine) before rc1, the bug could have been introduced in the releases 0.9.60,0.9.61 as well)
When starting DeusEx with full debug info activated, the following sound related log lines appeared, when the sound stopped:
warn:dsound:DSOUND_PerformMix Probable buffer underrun warn:dsound:DSOUND_PerformMix Probable buffer underrun warn:dsound:DSOUND_PerformMix Probable buffer underrun warn:dsound:IDirectSoundBufferImpl_Lock Overwriting mixing position, case 1 warn:mmtime:timeEndPeriod Stub; we set our timer resolution at minimum fixme:dsound:DllCanUnloadNow (void): stub
I don't know if the last line is relevant as I immediately exited the game after the sound stopped. The first line repeated about 100 times, but I shortened it to three lines, so that the comment is not flooded with unnecessary information.
System: Kernel: 2.6.23-gentoo-r6 alsa-lib: 1.0.16 wine: 1.0-rc4

Forget about the previously posted log lines, they appear every time when I exit the game and don't seem to be connected to the sound loss during the game. Hence there is no suspicious log line even with WINEDEBUG=warn+all!

There is the same problem with Outcast. Using OSS seems to "solve" the problem.

--- Comment #6 from Lukas Jirkovsky l.jirkovsky@gmail.com 2008-06-26 04:02:19 --- This seems to be a prety nasty regression. I'm also experiencing it with System Shock 2 and Baldur's Gate 2, where both had working sounds before wine 1.0 (I didn't tested these games with rc versions).

--- Comment #7 from Lukas Jirkovsky l.jirkovsky@gmail.com 2008-06-26 04:07:59 --- I've forgot to mention what actions lead to muting the sound. In SS2 it's loading saved game, in BG II it's usually fighting.

For SS2 - not only. Changing resolution, sound options - everything on main menu mute sound. This happen both on alsa and oss.

Hi,

Confurm that for System Shock 2. It seems ALSA produce this error.
Bug still actual for Wine 1.1.0

--- Comment #11 from Viktor Kojouharov vkojouharov@gmail.com 2008-07-26 12:27:47 --- Shouldn't the severity of this bug be set to 'Major' or 'Critical'? It's obvious that every app that uses sound is affected by it, and thus does not function properly.

--- Comment #12 from Jörg Höhle hoehle@users.sourceforge.net 2008-08-28 01:04:31 --- Same effects as comment #2 for the game Geheimakte Tunguska: ALSA "HW emulation" works, OSS works, but regular ALSA reproducibly stops sound putput when exiting the load/save menu. I.e. with ALSA default settings, loading a saved game results in no sound (similar to comment #7). Starting the game from scratch is fine, until you save. No particular log output is seen in the console. Using 1.1.3, Ubuntu 8.04 on HP Compaq nc6220
