Bug ID: 53636 Summary: System tray not visible, Ubuntu 20.0.2, Wine 7.16 Staging Product: Wine Version: 7.16 Hardware: x86-64 OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown Assignee: wine-bugs@winehq.org Reporter: jubilantjerry@gmail.com Distribution: ---
Created attachment 73034 --> https://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=73034 Tooltip from WeChat that should be from the system tray
System is running Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. Kernel version is 5.4.0-125-generic. Desktop environment is Unity 7.5.0. Hardware is Dell Inspiron 7577, which has an Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-7300HQ CPU and a Nvidia GTX 1060 Max-Q GPU.
When running an application that minimizes to the system tray when closed, the application is effectively gone. There is no small system tray panel on the screen, unlike what I see about the issue online. Maybe the system tray is size 0x0 on the top left corner, since the tooltip pop-ups that should appear on the system tray icon appear on the top left of my screen.
The lack of system tray was observed with WeChat, I don't know of other applications that use the system tray and have an automatic tooltip at the moment, though if you point me to an installer I can try it to see if the problem is reproduced.
Let me know if other information is needed.

Why are you using Wine Staging? Please try again in plain Wine.

--- Comment #2 from jubilantjerry@gmail.com --- Sure, just tested on wine-stable and it seems the bug persists. The dock is still not visible, only the tool-tip.
Wine version: 7.18 Staging, and 7.0 Stable WeChat version: 3.7.6.44 Download link: https://pc.weixin.qq.com/?lang=en_US, which links to https://dldir1.qq.com/weixin/Windows/WeChatSetup.exe. I'm not sure if it works outside China, I'll attach the installer exe too.
I installed staging a while back because I figured it'll include the newer bug fixes, and because stability was not a major concern (I didn't know if a Windows application was working on Wine and wanted to give it a try on the latest version).

--- Comment #3 from jubilantjerry@gmail.com --- Seems I cannot attach the installer .exe as it is 130MB. But from what I can tell, the second download link (https://dldir1.qq.com/weixin/Windows/WeChatSetup.exe) works.

--- Comment #5 from jubilantjerry@gmail.com --- I don't think so, that bug mentioned that a system tray is in fact visible, they just cannot make a window pop up on mouseover.
I don't even have a system tray at all.

(In reply to jubilantjerry from comment #0)
System is running Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. Kernel version is 5.4.0-125-generic. Desktop environment is Unity 7.5.0.
AFAIK, Ubuntu 20.04's default desktop envrinoment is GNOME Shell. Are you sure that what you are using is Ubuntu 20.04 and Unity?
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=53636
--- Comment #7 from jubilantjerry@gmail.com --- Hello Zactry, yes I do use Unity. I have used Ubuntu machines back when Unity was the default and had gotten used to it, so when the default was changed I installed ubuntu-unity-desktop.
For specifics, $DESKTOP_SESSION returns unity, $XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP returns Unity:Unity7:ubuntu, and wmctrl -m shows Compiz in the first line.

--- Comment #8 from Jactry Zeng jactry92@gmail.com --- Thanks. Confirmed that it still can be reproduced with Wine 8.19 on Ubuntu Unity 23.10 which ships Unity 7.7. And it isn't only about WeChat, actually, it can be reproduced with any application that owns a tray icon. AFAIS, Unity doesn't implement tray icon, just like GNOME Shell does. I installed a native application Spotify from snap, and Unity didn't display its tray icon either. Ideally, Wine needs to display a tray icon standalone window while tray icon isn't available for the platform.

Can the status of the bug report be changed back to something like ASSIGNED or NEW? I've already answered your questions. The bug persists to this day even on the stable branch on Wine 9.11. Seems I can only change the status to NEEDINFO, RESOLVED or CLOSED, all of which are not the correct description.
