Summary: WinPCap 4.0.1 installer does not run at all Product: Wine Version: CVS/GIT Platform: All URL: http://www.winpcap.org/ OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: wine-misc AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: mallegonian@gmail.com
Created an attachment (id=7903) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=7903) Log of wine output
http://www.winpcap.org/install/default.htm WinPCap 4.0.1 installer
It doesn't do anything, only wine produces output.
This is possibly the only thing that prevents wine from running Cain & Abel.

--- Comment #1 from Trevor Bergeron mallegonian@gmail.com 2007-08-31 14:08:37 --- Sorry, this is on GIT 20070830, compiled according to the guide in the wiki. Also tried (failed) in 0.9.43.

--- Comment #2 from Juan Lang juan_lang@yahoo.com 2007-08-31 15:22:58 --- It's not clear from the log what's going wrong. However, WinPCap installs a network filter driver, and that won't work in Wine, nor is it likely ever to be supported.
By Cain Abel, do you mean: http://www.oxid.it/cain.html ?
Since the interface to WinPCap is nearly identical to libpcap, it should be possible for you to write a replacement WinPCap dll that talks natively to libpcap. Or, contact the Cain & Abel developers and ask for a port.

--- Comment #3 from Trevor Bergeron mallegonian@gmail.com 2007-08-31 15:59:02 --- Pfft, I have no idea how to do that...
That is the Cain, I'll ask on the forums. There are other programs that use winpcap, so having builtin forwarding would be nice if possible.
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9535
--- Comment #4 from Juan Lang juan_lang@yahoo.com 2007-08-31 16:20:21 --- It's not likely, because WinPCap isn't part of Windows. It depends on the kernel networking stack of Windows, which isn't present in Wine. So while it's possible to write such a thing, it seems like a pretty small target audience, and it wouldn't ever be part of Wine (as, again, it's not part of Windows.)
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9535
--- Comment #5 from Trevor Bergeron mallegonian@gmail.com 2007-08-31 16:38:13 --- The other thing is that the problem is with the installer, not what is being installed. I made a post on the oxid forum.
Cain does not run because the DLLs are not there. With the DLLs, even without the drivers, it may work for hash cracking (what I mainly use it for).

--- Comment #6 from Vitaliy Margolen vitaliy@kievinfo.com 2007-08-31 17:04:03 --- Remove ~/.wine directory and try again. You do not have latest Wine environment on the contrary to what you clame (cvs/git).

--- Comment #7 from Trevor Bergeron mallegonian@gmail.com 2007-08-31 18:31:55 --- What makes you say that?
I releaded GIT, removed .wine, and ran it again. Oh, whoops, it still doesn't work. See the new log.

--- Comment #12 from Tony Wasserka tony.wasserka@freenet.de 2008-07-28 09:44:13 --- As of Wine wine-1.1.2-6-gaae52b3, the installer at least does run. However, while installing, there pops up a message saying: "An error occurred while installing the Microsoft Network Monitor Driver (NetMon) (0x80040154). You will be able to use WinPcap on standart network adapters, but not on Dialup connections and VPNs. Please contact the WinPcap Team winpcap-team@winpcap.org. The installation will now continue" But then the installer finishes fine, so this bug seems to be fixed.

--- Comment #13 from Alexandre amaciel81@gmail.com 2008-12-10 06:55:34 --- Hi,
Here too, I have the Tony's problem, but WinPCAP installed fine.
I used WinPCAP 4.02, with Wine 1.1.10 in Kubuntu 8.10 64 bits.
Then, I think that this bug can be closed.
Best regards, Alexandre

--- Comment #14 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2008-12-10 10:03:56 --- Appears to install fine here as well (error aside, but that will never work). Doesn't run though, but looks like it's because of missing dlls: err:module:import_dll Library NPPTools.dll (which is needed by L"C:\windows\system32\WanPacket.dll") not found err:module:import_dll Library WanPacket.dll (which is needed by L"C:\windows\system32\packet.dll") not found err:module:import_dll Library packet.dll (which is needed by L"C:\windows\system32\wpcap.dll") not found err:module:import_dll Library wpcap.dll (which is needed by L"C:\Program Files\WinPcap\rpcapd.exe") not found err:module:import_dll Library NPPTools.dll (which is needed by L"C:\windows\system32\WanPacket.dll") not found err:module:import_dll Library WanPacket.dll (which is needed by L"C:\windows\system32\packet.dll") not found err:module:import_dll Library packet.dll (which is needed by L"C:\Program Files\WinPcap\rpcapd.exe") not found err:module:LdrInitializeThunk Main exe initialization for L"C:\Program Files\WinPcap\rpcapd.exe" failed, status c0000135

--- Comment #16 from Niko Sandschneider nsandschn@gmx.de 2009-12-08 11:57:06 --- In git the WinPCap 4.0.1 shows the same behavior as described in comment #14. But since the bug is only about the installation, I would consider it as fixed.
