Summary: Warhammer 40K: DoW demo exits silently Product: Wine Version: 1.1.18 Platform: PC URL: http://download.cnet.com/Warhammer-40-000-Dawn-of-War- Dark-Crusade-demo/3000-7483_4-10579330.html OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P3 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: kennybobs@o2.co.uk
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War Demo exits silently.
Appdb claims this should work on older Wines but I have tried 0.9.51 and 0.9.33 with the exact same result.
Wine 1.1.18 gives no console output at all.
The GraphicsConfig.exe does work though.

I'm using whatever version comes with Ubuntu 8.10.
Unfortunately, I'm low on disc space so can't install the demo at the moment. I'll check again asap.

OpenGL vendor string: Mesa Project OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 7.2
It would not work. You have to install proprietary driver (ATI or NVIDIA) or wait until free drivers support all 3D stuff properly (far from there yet).

Every other program starts fine and Dawn of War used to do so as well.
How do I make wine prduce a more helpful output? Currently it fails without saying anything.

--- Comment #8 from Athrun samurai_no_densetsu@yahoo.es 2010-11-11 11:55:49 CST --- Yes, but this issue happens also on Windows, look at the Relic's forums:
http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?81315-Problem-quot-Could-not-find......
And there's a savegame issue for the Dark Crusade an Winter Assault demos, wich is fixed creating a "Profile" directory when it does not exist.
http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?219770-Fix-Unable-to-create-a-pro...
So, unlikely wine developers can fix what is brokeneven on Windows. So, maybe we could mark this bug as wontfix?

--- Comment #9 from HennR hennr@hennr.name 2010-11-11 15:18:29 CST --- Well, the point is that it already worked...
Why is that?
I will read the link you posted within the next days.

--- Comment #10 from HennR hennr@hennr.name 2010-11-12 02:08:04 CST --- Hmm, the forum article doesn't bring any news, but still it's interesting that these problems happen under windows as well.
If we only would know why, or in which case...
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17969
--- Comment #11 from Athrun samurai_no_densetsu@yahoo.es 2010-11-12 06:41:48 CST --- Why is quite clear, a poorly done installer, in fact I just tested it on a Windows machine and same result, so is not uncommon.
There could be another demo or even the installer work fine under the right conditions (ex: USA systems), but it dosen't mean that the issue dosen't happen or is uncommon to every DoW demo (in fact is a problem widely spread to every DoW demo).
So keeping it simple:
On windows Condition: Demo/GraphicConfig fails to start/save, warnings.log file complaints about missing folders Proposed fix: Create required folders (GraphicsOptions\Data Engine\Data Profiles) Result: Game works flawless
On Linux Condition: Demo/GraphicConfig fails to start/save, warnings.log file complaints about missing folders Proposed fix: Create required directories (mkdir GraphicsOptions/Data Engine/Data Profiles) Result: Game works flawless
Pretty straight huh?
And also Codeweavers are aware of this problem: http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/cat/?app_id=1675;tips=1
But in any case, if you still want look futher for a fix, the problem source comes from the installer, so it should be the place to look, but I'm not optimistic about finding a fix as if it also happens on Windows...
Thats is why I proposed a wontfix (is behaving the same as on Windows).

--- Comment #15 from Ken Sharp kennybobs@o2.co.uk 2010-11-24 15:44:51 CST --- Complete nonsense.
This DEMO works fine under Windows XP. Bug persists in Wine 1.3.6.
The app now reports "Cannot find data... make sure you are running from the game's directory" or words to that effect.
I am now using an Nvidia card with the official drivers. But this is quite obviously not a graphics problem anyway.
Same error whether launching from the console, .desktop or .lnk file.
GraphicsConfig.exe no longer works and reports the same problem so something must have changed along the way, but this bug was reported a long time ago. Nonetheless, problem persists.

--- Comment #17 from Athrun samurai_no_densetsu@yahoo.es 2010-11-24 16:45:57 CST --- Ken, check the warnings.log file on your game directory. Almost for sure it will be missing the following directories:
GraphicsOptions/Data Engine/Data Profiles
Which installer fail to create on wine (and in my own case, in XP too, but most likely because regional characters), and re-test, or attach the warnings.log here.
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17969
--- Comment #18 from Athrun samurai_no_densetsu@yahoo.es 2010-11-24 17:01:25 CST --- In fact, creating:
GraphicsOptions/Data <- will let you use GraphicsConfig.exe Engine/Data <- will let you start the game Profiles <- will let you start create a prfile in the demo
Also I have to state that this only happen with the Dawn of War demos, with the retail clients everything works fine, and there isn't any strange behaviour coming from the installer. (Mainly because game itself doesn't create those directories even if these are missing)

Ken, check the warnings.log file on your game directory.
No such file exists.
GraphicsOptions/Data Engine/Data Profiles
Yep, that gets it working.
Could be an MSI bug.
