Summary: Caesar IV does not start Product: Wine Version: 0.9.47. Platform: Other OS/Version: other Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: minor Priority: P2 Component: wine-misc AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: freddybob@gmail.com
Created an attachment (id=8789) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=8789) console log
The game Caesar IV does not load... I have followed instructions from a similar bug when I encountered an error with what I'm guessing is directX support (the instructions were:
# In the install folder's 'Support/DirectX' folder, extract d3dx9_29.dll by running 'cabextract Feb2006_d3dx9_29_x86.cab', then copy d3dx9_29.dll to Wine's 'windows/system32' directory (usually ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32)
# Place msvcr71.dll in Wine's 'windows/system32' directory
Having done this, I now get a lot further in the output in console, but the game still does not load. I will attach the console output.

(note: for the demo to run into this crash you have to create the registry key HKLM/System/MountedDevices to work around another bug)

--- Comment #4 from Jack jack@cmp-france.homelinux.org 2009-06-24 05:08:35 --- I've got a new behavior on the demo... It still does not really start, though. It was complaining about mscoree.dll at first, so I grabbed it from dll-find, set it as native. Then it complained about .NET, so sh winetricks dotnet20 and I got it to start... But with a black screen. I see the mouse cursor, and hear the music, it seems I can clicks the buttons but I cna't see them. I'll attach the output.

(It would be nice if someone who has the demo working with native msxml could test without native msxml and attach a log of the problem happening... or better yet, file a new bug just for that.)

Apart from the font rendering problem, the game demo seems to run fine without native msxml3.
Running wine-1.3.8 and using current winetricks.
In a fresh wineprefix directory..
Install dotnet20 with winetricks. Install the game. Replace d3dx9_30.dll and d3dx9_36.dll with native versions. I used winetricks to install directx9 into a temporary wineprefix dir and then copied those files over.
Run the game from the game directory, once it launches, enter the setup menu (4th button from the top) then click the lower left button, this should generate the CaesarIV.ini file. It should be then possible to click the top button from the main menu and start the game. Everything seems work, I can place objects on the map etc, I just can't read any text :)

Tried with Wine 1.3.10.20101230. I have installed the game from the disk and the Windows version of mono (2.8.1, installed within wine).
C4Exec.exe stops with an unhandled exception 0x40000015 at address 0xb7740073:0x006b0609 (thread 0047)
Launching CaesarIV.exe instead of C4Exec.exe results in a dialog box about inserting the original disk rather than a copy (although the original disk is already inserted).

again ... different issues mixed here. There is no msxml problem here.
Making this bug about copy protection. All other issues are tracked separately!
Please retest using original media and recent Wine version!
Run "ProtectionID" tool (http://pid.gamecopyworld.com/) on the main binaries (*.exe, *.dll) to identify exact copy protection. Copy/paste the output of the log window here - only executables that have been flagged containing protection.
See this bug: http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27349 for examples what kind of information is relevant from "Protection ID".
The demo version is protected with SecuROM 7.x (works):

--- Comment #17 from testing.tigerwolf@mail.com 2011-11-04 16:44:20 CDT --- Various problems still occures on wine 1.3.31, linked to media recognition failure :
- during the installation, when Disk2 is needed, CaesarIV installer is unable to load from "Z:/media/Disk2". It is possible to overcome this problem by copying Disk2 content on drive_c of wine (nota : copying it into another directory, /home for exemple, leads to the same kind of problem)
- after the installation, launching CaesarIV.exe or Autorun.exe/Play to CaesarIV, leads to a media unrecognition...

--- Comment #21 from Anastasius Focht focht@gmx.net 2012-01-24 16:04:54 CST --- Hello,
I bought the game for few bucks and looked into it ...
First, you need .NET 2.0 prerequisite (game launcher/registation will need it later) -> 'winetricks -q dotnet20'.
The installation media change problem was bug 25963 and got fixed in Wine 1.3.36
The copy protection issue is partly bug 26459 (fixed by commit http://source.winehq.org/git/wine.git/commitdiff/b94fabfb5bfe9a19af22b9e28f7...)
--- snip --- -=[ ProtectionID v0.6.4.0 JULY]=- (c) 2003-2010 CDKiLLER & TippeX Build 07/08/10-17:57:05 Ready... The original media is recognized in general but there are some cases where it still fails. The reason is there a high precision time measurement done during software and optical drive interaction, called "data density measurement".
There is a set of locations spread over the disc which are read using pairs of SCSI read commands (pass-through) per location from the drive. You can watch them using +cdrom channel. While the disc spins the time is measured it takes for the second command to return (depends on the time it takes the disc to do a full round = depends on the data density). Combining all predefined locations a vendor specific pattern is formed and verified.
Wine might not be able to reliably guarantee certain timing constrains.
If your disk fails to be recognized this helps:
- start wineserver and services prior (notepad/whatever in different terminal) - wait a bit until the drive/media completely stopped spinning before start
Don't run any CPU intensive processes in background that cause workload spikes during time measurement/calibration phase.
(still fails: try again)
