Summary: Program halts when on another virtual desktop Product: Wine Version: 1.1.1 Platform: PC-x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: todurov@gmail.com
Dwarf Fortress http://mayday.w.staszic.waw.pl/df.htm pauses when I switch away to another virtual desktop. I suppose it's the case with other programs as well, but I couldn't test it.
It doesn't pause on Windwoes when one alt-tabs away from it, therefore it shouldn't pause in Wine as well.
It doesn't pause when there are multiple windows including DF on the same desktop, even if it doesn't have focus. It doesn't pause when Wine is configured to have a virtual desktop (which I'm using now as a workaround).
wine-1.1.1, Debian Etch, 2.6.18-5-amd64, window manager is xmonad

--- Comment #1 from Wont Say todurov@gmail.com 2008-07-30 02:57:30 --- When running in a virtual desktop, the Xorg process' CPU usage is very high (everything available, that is >98%), regardless of whether the game is on the current virtual desktop or not. Even if the game sits idle otherwise.
Might be a driver issue.

--- Comment #2 from Wont Say todurov@gmail.com 2008-07-30 03:44:21 --- Actually, the high Xorg CPU usage isn't limited to Wine virtual desktop -- the CPU usage is high whenever the game runs. Even if it doesn't do much. Does this warrant a new bug?

Yes, one problem per bug report please. You should make sure it's not the case on Windows as well first. Many games chew up the cpu when "idling".

--- Comment #4 from Wont Say todurov@gmail.com 2008-08-01 00:37:09 --- Fine, forget about that high Xorg CPU usage.
But the original problem remains.

--- Comment #6 from Watermelon Farmer fin4lf4nt4sy@gmail.com 2010-04-13 10:53:58 --- Yes, I can confirm that it still happens on wine-1.1.41. I was running vanilla Dwarf Fortress (with no graphic sets, mods etc.) version 0.28.181.40d at the time.

--- Comment #8 from Fabian Ebner f.ebner94@gmail.com 2013-08-30 13:58:15 CDT --- The game can be downloaded here: http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/older_versions.html It doesn't stop when changing desktop. But, if I am in fullscreen mode, it messes up the screen resolution when changing back and doesn't accept any input.

--- Comment #9 from Fabian Ebner f.ebner94@gmail.com 2013-08-30 14:23:56 CDT --- Forgot to say that the screen resolution messes up on Windows too, but at least it reacts to input.
