First Bug report , be patient If I wrong something , I will learn form your
comments in case of.
Wine 1.1.16 , Ubuntu 8.10 , Gnome 2.24.1 , Notebook IBM Thinkpad R52 2Gb ram.
I used for weeks MetaTrader 4.0 to do trading . It's was working perfectly.
I was so satisfied that I reported to Wine application database my comments

Then Ubuntu pop up a update security request to dash . 
After reboot program do not load more. Nothing . Nor from gui nor form
terminal.

Use bash/ksh/tcsh instead - easy work around - minor.

Confirming without any doubt issue start just after security update ( and there
was only the dash update , no other ) I supposed ubuntu use dash , also reading
ubuntu wiky.
Probably I am wrong becasue if I type :
lodewig@lodewig-laptop:~$ ps
  PID TTY          TIME CMD
12540 pts/0    00:00:00 bash
12557 pts/0    00:00:00 ps
it seems I am using bash ( sorry as said I am not expert ) . 
I don't know if a security update on dash can impact to bash too ... otherwise
the bug is another . 
Let me know if any other data could be useful.

Have you filed a bug with Ubuntu? Have you tried reverting to an older version
of dash and seeing if it works?

Austin , yes I filled it with Ubuntu 8.10 . I am not able to revert dash to
older version , not enough expert. If you drive me I will do it asap and report
to you result.

You'd have to find the older version in their package archive and install it
over the new one.

As you can see in attachment ( screen.png ) I discovered process is running .
Program is " terminal.exe" a trading program named "Meta Trader 4.0 " . It's
running but ABSOLUTELY nothing on screen, nothing . I discovered because this
program has some alarm sound triggered by currency value on market and
suddendly start to give me some alarm sound .. but again there is noting on
screen.
I tried to change to dash , to bash , to sh , to rhbash , every time rebooting
and rechecking wich bash is running with PS , but nothing change. program start
" in background" with sound and all but no any video.

Is dash the only thing that changed? Did you also upgrade wine?

For what I remember I upgraded wine form 1.1.15 to 1.1.16 but some days before
and program go on to works pretty nice without problem . No , I don't remember
any other particular upgrade other than dash.

Try downgrading wine...Dash shouldn't cause this, and even if it did, not
really a wine bug.

Anyway I did today :

1. Uninstall and reinstall the program ( Meta Trader ) . 
   Nothing change it . Do not load .

2. Remove complitely wine 1.1.16 and re install wine same versione 1.1.16 .
Then I reinstalled the program Meta Trader . 
Now it's loading  and works apparently without problems .

Honestly I don't know if it is a wine bug or not a this point. 
Probably something been corrupted .

Which is the cause ? Wine ? Ubuntu ? Hardware ? I don't know .

I will go on some day to use it checking if it is stable or not .

Could be a corrupted install of wine (unlikely, unless you build yourself) or a
corrupted/foobared ~/.wine (likely).

Not so sure for me because I used wine since 1.1.0 , installed by Ubuntu
Synaptics packge manager and never got such a problem , so I believe wine was
correctly installed . Anyway ok now works.
