Summary: AppDB front page doesn't handle obsolete versions of online games Product: WineHQ Apps Database Version: unspecified Platform: Other OS/Version: other Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: major Priority: P2 Component: website-bugs AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: winehq-bugzilla@bleeter.id.au
The AppDB front page shows a version of WoW that is obsolete as a Gold rating. I believe this is because the page is generated via the number of votes users place against an app, and doesn't take into account whether the version is no longer live.
This is a self-feeding issue, as people will come to the page and place votes against the version they see (people are lazy), not what they actually use - thus further feeding it's high-vote count and leaving it on the front page.
From email discussion with Alexander Sørnes and Chris Morgan:
Alexander: How is the following:
We add an 'obsolete' checkbox on the version edit page, with a help text explaining that this should be used in cases where the version can no longer be used because it depends on connecting to a server etc. When a user checks this, he is asked which version its votes should be moved to, and it is no longer possible to vote for that version.

I am a maintainer ;)
Thanks for pointing out my own stupidity. At least there's a bugzilla entry that tracks the change (he says, trying to dig himself out of the hole he's in) :D

--- Comment #3 from Bleeter Yaluser winehq-bugzilla@bleeter.id.au 2007-09-21 19:12:25 --- One thing I note that I cannot do, is mark an app as obsolete and *not* move it's votes. I've set up a separate DB entry for WoW's public test servers, so bug tracking etc., can be performed away from the live versions. This was particularly helpful during the 2.2.0 public test, as undocumented DSound behaviour was identified, and fixed before the game will go live. As such, the test results will be irrelevant for the live version.
I won't be able to mark the 2.2.0 PTR as obsolete without moving votes - and I don't want to move the votes as all PTR builds are not 'real' live.
Thoughts?

--- Comment #4 from Alexander Nicolaysen Sørnes alex@thehandofagony.com 2007-09-21 19:21:53 --- I'm not sure I'm getting your point here. Why would you want to have votes for an obsolete version?

--- Comment #5 from Bleeter Yaluser winehq-bugzilla@bleeter.id.au 2007-09-21 20:02:21 --- I worked around the problem with the 2.2.0 PTR (Public Test Realm) by deleting the AppDB entry. However, I'm of the opinion (and willing to be corrected) that versions shouldn't be deleted.
Now, there's no accounting for user stupidity, and as such there may be cases where people vote for a PTR. As this version never reaches a 'live' state, insofar as being a 'real' release, any votes that might get placed by a user will currently be migrated - and I believe that this would be an inappropriate action.
It's not that I want votes kept, I couldn't care less about votes against a PTR. It's that I can't obsolete a PTR without migrating votes, which to my mind 'dirties' the released versions' vote count.

--- Comment #6 from Alexander Nicolaysen Sørnes alex@thehandofagony.com 2007-09-27 05:26:22 --- If peopple vote for a PTR, chances are they would like developers to focus on that version, or that they are more interested in playing that than the current release. These people are obviously interested in playing WoW, so they would want their votes moved to the current WoW release when the test realm closes.
