Bug #: 31072 Summary: Diablo III: Sound is very quiet Product: Wine Version: 1.5.7 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: sworddragon2@aol.com Classification: Unclassified
If some NPC's are talking for example if I'm finding a book with a story I have troubles to understand them because the voices are very quiet. I have already set all ingame sound to 100% and have still to need to turn up much my sound boxes. Only the cinematics have a loud (normal) sound.

--- Comment #1 from Frédéric Delanoy frederic.delanoy@gmail.com 2013-04-20 03:30:48 CDT --- Does it still happen in recent wine (1.5.28 or later)?

--- Comment #2 from sworddragon2@aol.com 2013-04-20 04:09:51 CDT --- The ingame NPC sound is still quite while the cinematics are loud. But it is difficult to say if this is really a bug (I have just the confirmation of somebody who said me that on Windows both sound types are normal).
The best would be if somebody who has Linux and Windows could test if there is a big difference on both sound types.

--- Comment #3 from sworddragon2@aol.com --- I'm seeing this issue too on The Forest. Some sounds are normal like cutting with an axe while others like the shouts of the natives are very quiet.

Is there a download to reproduce the issue? You need to attach audio channels as attachment. See FAQ for help.

Both games require a key to play.
What that supposed to mean?

--- Comment #8 from Andrew Eikum aeikum@codeweavers.com --- I played for a little bit and wasn't able to reproduce this. Can you give more exact steps to reproduce it, preferably someplace near the beginning of the game?
The game seems to use mmdevapi directly.

--- Comment #9 from sworddragon2@aol.com --- In Diablo 3 just create a new character and take up a diary in New Tristram. The voice that is reading from it is very quite while other sounds are normal.

There is a free trial available, which should be enough to test the issue. I've provided the URL.

I found a book inside a house called "Deckard Cain's Journal" that plays an audio clip. Is that what you're talking about?
It sounds fine for me. Can you check that your speaker configuration in winecfg is correct? What sound driver does winecfg say you're using?
https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31072
--- Comment #12 from sworddragon2@aol.com --- Yes, I'm meaning such books. It also works on the voices which appear if you get knowledge about a new monster after killing it. If I'm increasing the sound so that these voices are hearing normal other actions like fighting monsters are extreme loud (probably not that noticeable at the beginning but if you switch to a character that can participate on mass battles). winecfg says that winealsa.drv is in use.

Sound appears to function correctly with wine-6.5 (non-staging) [tested on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS with Gnome].

--- Comment #22 from Zebediah Figura z.figura12@gmail.com --- Reported as working by other users, and the original reporter seems to have disappeared. I'm hesitant to report it as FIXED, given that it seems to be setup-specific.
Note also that the original user seems to have used winealsa.drv; it's probably worth testing with that driver if it wasn't already done.
