Summary: Counter Strike and Half Life 2 don't start Product: Wine Version: 1.1.12 Platform: PC-x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: major Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: cokehabit@gmail.com
Created an attachment (id=19459) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=19459) console dump
Originally Half Life 2 wouldn't install from the DVD but Steam did so i downloaded them through Steam.
When i tried to start Half Life 2 I got an error about FileSystem_steam.dll being unable to start and after making a backup, copying over the file from a windows installation then deleting it (I read that it will recreate it) it still wouldn't work but in a different way. Now just nothing happens. I get the "Loading..." and then it disappears.
All i get in the console is lots of fixme's and some errors like:
err:seh:raise_exception Unhandled exception code c0000005 flags 0 addr 0x7ee2284d err:ole:CoGetClassObject class {9a5ea990-3034-4d6f-9128-01f3c61022bc} not registered err:ole:CoGetClassObject no class object {9a5ea990-3034-4d6f-9128-01f3c61022bc} could be created for context 0x1
I have created an attachment of me opening steam then trying to open HL2 and then CS:S
On another note, I tried to open the windows binary in my XP partition and that works fine. I couldn't open CS:S though.

What video card & drivers? Have you disabled "Steam community in-game"?

Video Card nVidia 6600GT, drivers 177.82. Steam community is disabled. An update to 1.1.15 hasn't solved anything.
I still get errors like

Compiz not installed and nothing has been changed from the basic setup which looks fine to me.

--- Comment #6 from Vitaliy Margolen vitaliy@kievinfo.com 2009-02-16 11:02:43 --- It really looks to me that you somehow corrupted the steam instal and/or data files.
- Please remove / rename the ~/.wine directory - Install Steam (following HOWTO on AppDB) - Copy "Program Files/Steam/steamapps" directory from windows. Make sure to properly set permissions (644 on files and 755 on directories) and ownership

I seem to be having a similar issue. When I attempt to run left4dead or half-life 2 from Steam using wine 1.1.14 and 1.1.15, it fails to run. I have attached a console dump. It works using wine 1.0.1. My machine is also PC-x86-64, with an NVidia 8600 GT video card. Using Debian Lenny x86-64. I installed wine 1.1.{14,15} from the lamaresh.net repository, 1.0.1 from the debian repository.

--- Comment #9 from James Henderson james.m.henderson@gmail.com 2009-02-25 17:27:07 --- I seems to be working for me now. I am on the latest git (wine-1.1.15-391-gb86552f).
I can start 'half life 2' and 'left 4 dead'.

--- Comment #11 from cokehabit@gmail.com 2009-08-26 17:46:50 --- Actually yes. I just tried opening my windows files through wine and I get this:

As I thought - bug invalid. You have to _properly install this program_. And you _can not_ run it from ntfs partition...
Closing invalid.
If you have _properly_ installed at least Steam (you can copy contents of steamapps directory). And you have installed Steam on _UNIX_ filesystem (not ntfs, not fat). And you have followed the HOWTO on appdb page (turned off in-game steam community, and you _ DO NOT_ have pulse audio running in any way shape or form. And your video drivers are setup properly. Only then you can reopen.

--- Comment #15 from James Henderson james.m.henderson@gmail.com 2009-08-27 09:09:22 --- Although I have not recently tested this issue, I find it prudent to note the following: when I initially had this issue, left4dead and half-life 2 were both installed properly and so was steam. That said, the issue was resolved last time that I tested it (wine-1.1.15-391-gb86552f).
