Please try the new Wine version.
I installed the newest available in UBUNTU (with wineHQ Archives), this is wine 1.1.1 and the problem is still persistent there.

--- Comment #7 from Dan Kegel dank@kegel.com 2009-01-26 16:04:36 --- Which version of stata is this? Is the problem still happening in wine-1.1.13 or later?
(Also, do any of you have the stata 10 install problem described in http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=12690 where you had to copy isstata.100 from a windows box?)
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14610
--- Comment #8 from Mario S sm666@gmx.at 2009-01-27 04:30:36 --- This is STATA / SE version 10.0 (afaik the actual one, updated), the version worked fine up to wine 0.9.xx. Since 1.0.0 Stata crashes when calling "help" (some calls, like update use "help" as well!). In addition the reservation of more than 1GB for data was possible below this version (up to 1700megs) now only 1100megs are possible.
These problems are prevalent in the versions of wine up to 1.1.6. SINCE THEN STATA is not even Starting any more (the process runs, but no window is shown). (this is still valid for 1.1.13)

--- Comment #9 from Dan Kegel dank@kegel.com 2009-01-27 05:40:46 --- Can you file a separate bug for the 1.1.6 regression? Is 1.1.6 the first version that fails to show a window?
Also, how did you install stata 11.0?

--- Comment #10 from Mario S sm666@gmx.at 2009-01-27 05:53:17 --- when there is enough time, i will do the regression for the other bug. As far as this bug is concerned: the help error is there since wine 1.0.0 (done the regression already (see comments above). THIS IS STATA 10.0, and I didn't install it, I just copied the directory from my windows system (previously used windows on my pc). To be true, I didn't ever think of installing it directly in wine (I tried some programs and they didn't work that way ... copying was much easier) - Stata only creates its program-folder and that's all (as far as I remember).
what do you think?!?

Don't do this. Install it properly in wine. It doesn't work for many programs in windows either.

--- Comment #12 from Mario S sm666@gmx.at 2009-01-28 02:35:34 --- ok, once more, the program works in Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista and in former Wine Versions WITHOUT INSTALLATION, you just need to copy it (that is all the installer does). So I can try to install it, but I will promise that won't change a thing! The same applies to former versions of Stata.
thanx and best, i will go for the installation cd but this will take some time (burocracy..sh..)
mario ... wasting his time ...

--- Comment #13 from Dan Kegel dank@kegel.com 2009-01-28 06:08:08 --- Thanks! Sounds like we need two more bugs filed: one for the install issue mentioned in the appdb, and one for the hang you mentioned. If you could file them (even without a regression search) that would be helpful.

--- Comment #14 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2009-07-30 12:11:14 --- Is this still an issue in current (1.1.26 or newer) wine?

--- Comment #15 from Mario S sm666@gmx.at 2009-07-30 15:04:41 --- ok, sorry, i thought i already posted it here too, i think since wine 1.1.14 or 15 everything works fine again now. now using 1.1.26 and no more problems arouse. thanx a lot for your help and great work !!!
