There are too many old versions to choose, which may waste time
Would Wine Bugzilla hide the *very old* versions, or re-arrange them?

It would be quite a pain, we'd have to move all old bugs (including closed
bugs) to a new 'version' (pre-1.0 or something like that), which would cause a
lot of email notifications.

Additionally, the version is supposed to reflect the first tested version of
wine that has the bug. Changing all those versions would make it harder to
determine that for older bugs. That said, I don't know of anyone actually
running reports/queries on old bug data.

I personally don't think it's worth the effort. I'm open to discussion though
(which should be on wine-devel, not bugzilla).

IMO this is more of an interface problem. If we replaced the version dropdown
by a js combobox with autocomplete it'd be a lot better...

Well, maybe we don't need to remove them, just *hide* them.
And for old versions, there would be a 'click to show more choices' button

But I don't know if it is difficult.

We try to stick close to upstream Bugzilla code, rather than maintain our own
fork.

IMO it would solve this problem if it is possible to reorder the list to have
newer versions in the top instead of numerical sort. This would require a
post-processing code to sort the list correctly.

I open the "Available" list, click the link to show all bugs, then arrange it
according to time and click again.

I get all bugs listed, the ones that have latest posts, comes top.

So basically all old bugs and wine versions are bottom.

We could close this?

Very old versions have now been grouped together under "pre-0.9" and the sort
order changed so that the most recent Wine versions are what the user sees when
filing a new bug.

Looks fixed to me.
