I tested in a 32-bit prefix and the game starts properly with built-in msvc* libraries. Tested with 1.7.44 and wine-1.7.47-67-g22f28d2.

I've had the same problem. I'm running a 64-bit Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS and wine 1.7.44 and only built in libraries (how would I go about adding msvcp100?). I was running 1.6 and I purged wine and cleaned its directory when upgrading. As for the log (above), I don't know how usefull it could be since calling HS from the terminal causes it to open battle net and close itself, calling it again with battle net open will cause it to just close itself. I need to press the big shiny button inside battle net to open the game (this is not new to me, I've always had to do it.).
P.S. if there is a way to get a better log for you I'd be glad to try it

--- Comment #9 from Anastasius Focht focht@gmx.net --- Hello folks,
I can't reproduce this with Wine 1.7.52 in clean 32-bit and 64-bit WINEPREFIX.
There is conflicting information in this ticket 'msvcp100' vs. 'dgbhelp'.
Again: please retest with recent Wine 1.7.5x and don't use any overrides!
Regards

I got the issue with 1.7.50 package from Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (ubuntu-wine PPA), latest version available to date (XFCE).
Adding msvcp100 (native, builtin) override works around the issue. dbghelp override doesn't.
Note issue does not occur with either compiled 1.7.52 or 1.7.50.
CCing ubuntu package maintainers.
