i am currently running mirc 7.27 on ubuntu 12.04 with wine 1.4.1 and when i try
to open a URL i get the 'Program Error' dialog box stating the winebrowser.exe
'encountered a problem and needs to close'.  i've tried using the development
version too and still the same behavior.  i had been using mIRC v7 for a while
on an ubuntu 10.04 machine with wine-1.4 on it and no issues there...

I can't reproduce the crash in wine 1.5.16. If it worked in wine 1.4 and
stopped working in newer versions you could run a regression test:

for me it is not working on both the stable and development versions, but only
on this box.  maybe it has to do with my transferring of my wine settings over
from the old box to this one?  i wish i could figure out how to reset wine, for
example.  i tried using 'apt-get remove --purge' and then reinstalled.  as
well, i tried moving my ~/.wine/*.reg files out to let them get recreated, but
that seems to break wine more as apps load up slower and the 'Configure Wine'
program never loads.

If you're talking about cleaning the default wine prefix you can simply
erase/rename ~/.wine

no, not really talking about that.  if i did that, then all of my Windows
programs would be gone too.  just talking about resetting wine to defaults or
something because there seems to be a problem with my installation since this
bug isn't reproducible anywhere else.

Well you can't really 'reset' wine without losing/breaking apps, since most
will change the wineprefix in some way.

hello, today 28/05/2014, I have the same problem when trying to access
winebrowser.exe links from the program to open my internet. remember that
before to give click the link within the program (league of legends) opening my
default browser in linux, but now I get this error

I downloaded mIRC 7.27 from
http://www.oldversion.com/windows/download/mirc-7-27, and I can't reproduce the
crash either in 1.7.51. Based on comment 2, it seems likely the problem was an
unclean wineprefix, but since the OR refused to test a clean one, we'll never
really know.

Marking WORKSFORME and editing the summary to specify the app affected. Reopen
if this is still an issue in a clean wineprefix in 1.7.51 and you are willing
and able to respond to requests for information.

the problem still exists to this day, currently with wine 1.7.50 and mIRC
7.43...
i thought it might be a problem with gecko because according to this page:
http://wiki.winehq.org/Gecko i should have 2.40 installed but in
/usr/share/wine/gecko there is no version 2.40.  so i downloaded
wine_gecko-2.40-x86_64.msi and wine_gecko-2.40-x86.msi and put them there but
didn't seem to help.  are those supposed to get executed somehow?

i'm not sure what you really want me to do to test this.  the link at
http://wiki.winehq.org/RegressionTesting is very long and confusing

i think we already determined it wasn't a regression so is that link even
valid?  it's a problem with my wine installation.  if i rename ~/.wine to
~/.wine-old and reinstall mIRC, it creates a new ~/.wine and i am able to open
URLs fine....

The download link is there help other people to *reproduce* your problem with
exactly the application version you created the bug report for.
This is standard procedure.

Anyway, the bug was likely invalid in first place (broken WINEPREFIX).
Bug reports become automatically invalid if you reused/recycled an existing
WINEPREFIX with multiple applications.
Do that at your own risk, there is no support for this use-case.
