Commit [1] from git.git repository seems to want to look into some details in
msvcrt.dll. Failing that will print the said message. Maybe wine msvcrt.dll
could be made compatible to that?

Where did you download the git for windows package?

What version of wine did you test? If not 1.7.23 please update and try again.

I cross built it using git 'master' branch. The mentioned commit is only in
v2.1.0-rc0 (so probably not packaged for windows yet), although msysgit people
may have a variant of it.

wine's master (as of yesterday, or the day before)
