Bug #: 33665 Summary: EVE Online: Slow text rendering Product: Wine Version: 1.5.31 Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: btbn@oromit.de Classification: Unclassified
Rendering text is realy slow in EVE Online with wine. This is most notable when the game renders the initial EULA/TOS(no idea if it still does this with the new launcher, but running ExeFile.exe directly with a fresh install should still display it), on Windows, the EULA is rendered imediately, without any noticable delay. On wine, it takes several minutes until it's done rendering the EULA. The client does not freeze while it renders it, but you have to wait for the text to appear, because you have to scroll down and accept the EULA.
Ingame there is no such large freeze, but the texts it renders are a lot smaller. But activating the FPS meter(Ctrl+F) shows a short negative fps spike each time something that renders notable ammounts of text happens, like opening a new window, a long chat message, and so on. This doesn't happen on windows, and it seems related to the realy slow text rendering of the EULA.
There is nothing suspicous in the wine output that could explain the slow rendering.
I tested this with wine 1.5.31 and the latest EVE client of today, and it still happens there.

--- Comment #1 from Commander Commander.Alchemy@gmail.com 2013-06-16 13:02:18 CDT --- I do have noticed this. If I would spam text in chat channels i would get about half the FPS in stations.
Question was however if it only happens when you are the one that types that. I never tested with someone else spamming local and see if the FPS goes down or not.
This issue is more showing on nVidia than its on AMD is one thing i noted though few months back. Will check back later if i get some logs on this.

This of course is based on the idea that this is an Eve problem, affecting Windoze too, and not a Wine problem. I've always noted, from the first day I encounter it, how Eve differs so dramatically from all other games in how it seems to act more like a bloated desktop app rather than a crafted game.

--- Comment #3 from Rodrigo rodrigo.goya.util@gmail.com 2013-08-31 01:27:30 CDT --- I have recently upgraded all my x11 libraries, mesa, libdrm, and other packages to finally get a decent FPS in EVE on Wine 1.6.
I have noticed that in my installation it is not really "large" amounts of text, but small amounts. Here is one example: - In a station with all windows closed I get ~100 FPS, - Open the skill training queue it drops down to 25 FPS, - Pause the queue but leave it opened I get 80 FPS.
The difference between pausing the queue is just 2 numbers that change every second (timers) and the flashing box that shows the level being trained.
FPS slowdown seems also be related to blinking text. For example: - In a station with all windows closed I get ~100 FPS (chat is collapsed, no text shown, just tab titles) - When a tab starts flashing (indicating activity) FPS drops down to ~80 - Expand/Collapse the chat window to get rid of the blinking brings FPS go to 100 FPS again.
