When I enable the option "Emulate a virtual desktop" for C&C95.EXE the game is
being displayed in a virtual desktop. However, if I change the Desktop
resolution to 1024 x 768 or 1280 x 1024 for the same application, the virtual
desktop resolution does not change when started afterwards.

Wine does not zoom the resolution. That setting is for the window display area.

Okay, but when I try to play the game with no virtual desktop settings the
screen is set to the native resolution of the game (640 x 480). This is okay,
but the panel stays on top of the game and is also being set to this resolution
and is way to big. What can I do?

Virtual desktop resizes to whatever size applications asks it to. So in your
case you get 640x480. Is that not what happens?

Yes, it does. But then it is difficult to play the game because the native
resolution of my 17 inch laptop screen is 1920 x 1200 pixels and the windowed
game is only 640 x 480.

So, I think then the only option is to play it without using virtual desktop
settings.

And this is okay because the the screen is being resized to full screen 640 x
480.

But the only problem I have then is that the gnome panel stays on top and I can
not seem to get rid of it.

Do you understand what I try to explain?

What window manager are you using? Have you disabled compiz?

Using Metacity and gtk window decorator it works, thank you.

However, the game plays more "smoothly" using compiz. Actually, it "stutters"
more using metacity and even "hangs" from time to time.

I would like to use wine in compiz window manager, can this be solved in
future?
