Summary: Thief2 crashes at startup Product: Wine Version: 1.1.2 Platform: PC-x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: critical Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: wine@jacob.wintershaven.net
Created an attachment (id=15540) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=15540) crash backtrace
Attempting to run Thief 2 (version 1.18) under Wine produces the crash detailed in the attachment. I'm running on Ubuntu 8.04, on a multicore AMD64 processor; I tried the suggested methods to force Thief2 to run on a single processor, but this merely produced the same crash again.

--- Comment #2 from Vitaliy Margolen vitaliy@kievinfo.com 2008-08-22 08:38:00 --- Looks like problem with SafeDisk to me. How did you install this game? Where did you get Wine from?
Can you also check what version of Safedisk you have? To do that - look at the file version of the system32/drivers/secdr.sys file.

--- Comment #3 from Jacob Wintersmith wine@jacob.wintershaven.net 2008-08-22 18:20:47 --- I installed the game from the original disks. Wine was installed from the Ubuntu binary packages (wine.budgetdedicated.com). Dumb question: how do I determine the version of "secdr.sys"?

--- Comment #7 from Alexander Dorofeyev alexd4@inbox.lv 2009-01-18 13:54:18 --- Seems to be Safedisk 1.41.000.
I got same crash as in first backtrace, although I have an iso image, not original CD, so I'm not completely sure it's Wine problem, not safedisk doing what it's supposed to be doing :). But it's definitely the protection, because no-cd patch "fixes" it.
Second backtrace is unrelated (it's the known video codec issue, not Wine bug).
Andrew Charles Hurst, did you have vanilla CD Thief or with any patches?

--- Comment #8 from Andrew Charles Hurst a.hurst@shef.ac.uk 2009-01-18 16:22:11 --- Alex, yes I've used the no-cd patch on Thief 2. Well spotted.
Thief 1 must use a different copy protection, since it works without patching.

How do you expect it to work without real CD?
(In reply to comment #5) What Wine is that? It's broken. Dlls are not at the correct addresses and complete mess of the address space usage.

Thief 2 works fine for me, I confirm that the initial crash is due to the copy protection. I am using Fedora 10, wine-1.1.12 and I needed to use the thief2nocd.zip crack to get it to work.
